Around fifty people of all ages joined in the Stanley Spencer Big Draw, part of a National Campaign for Drawing,  event on Saturday 19 October 2002.  The plan was to draw in Holy Trinity Church, however it was found to be full of the Cantorum Choir practising for their evening event. Being a beautiful, warm October day everyone was able to sit out in the churchyard and make the most of the wonderful Autumn weather. Local artist Phyllida Shelley-Smith talked to everyone first in the Gallery about Stanley Spencer’s drawings and how important they were as a basis for all his paintings. Visitors were then shown drawings by generations of Phyllida’s family, including her grandmother who attended the Slade at the same time as Stanley’s brother, Gilbert. It was clear to see how drawing styles have changed over the last 80 years. Participants were encouraged to choose from different drawing tools and to go and draw- which they did with apparent enjoyment. To end the session everyone went to the Parish Centre with their work, which they shared over a cup of tea. It made an impressive display!
