Cookham Duo Achieve Classic Arctic Success

(27 August 2003)

Two of Cookham's intrepid travellers have made it to the Arctic Circle. Gavin and Sarah Charlton-Brown set off in their 1952 Mercedes on 17th August to recreate a journey Gavin made as a child with his parents, Tom and Ruth.

When his parents died recently, Gavin decided to repeat the journey - in the same, now renovated, car - in memory of his parents; and to give any sponsorship money raised by the trip to Elizabeth House.  Tom and Ruth has both been members of Cookham's day centre in their later years and had gained great companionship from it.

The travellers made it to the Arctic Circle in Finland yesterday (Sunday 24th August) and are now on their way back south and into Russia to visit St Petersburg.  They return to the UK via Sweden and Denmark.

Already the trip has raised over £2000 - and it's still not too late to make a pledge.  A good time to do it would be when Gavin and Sarah return - on the afternoon of Cookham regatta on 6th September.  Or call Liz Dye at the day centre on 01628 527621.
