Help Save Our Library Staff

(13 March 2004)

Cookham residents are extremely proud of the wonderful new library facility in High Road and rightly so.  This is a fantastic amenity and is a jewel in the Royal Borough's crown.  Pam Thomas, who has been with the new library since it was opened in Jubilee Year 2002 has done wonders in setting it up and making it such an important part of the local community.

Sadly the powers that be have decided to move Pam to Windsor.  Pam says she would prefer to stay in Cookham, particularly as she has worked hard to build up a strong rapport with the locals.

The Parish Council’s offer of financial assistance to help the library extend its opening hours is an endorsement of the hard work that Pam and her team have put into making this venture a success. Changing her to another library against her wishes – and against ours – is surely a heartless move. Not only will we have lost a lovely lady but we shall lose a person with in-depth knowledge of all the small problems that inevitably occur with running a Centre that is used by so many different sections of the Community. Pam is to be replaced by someone else so there is no cost saving, just another bureaucratic decision.

We shall also be losing Anne Groom in July when her contract comes to an end. Anne has been at Cookham Library for many years, long before the new facility was available. Anne too would like to stay on, but has been told that there is not enough funding. In this day and age the library is such an important part of the community and is a way of offering a marvellous source of learning for so many people for not much outlay.

If you want Pam to stay at Cookham Library, please write or e-mail Mark Taylor
