The Cookham and Maidenhead branch of Amnesty held their annual fun quiz at the Pinder Hall on Friday 7th October. It was decided this must be the 10th one, although no one was absolutely sure how long it has been on. One thing was certain, it was the largest yet. There were eighteen tables with over 100 people taking part and the tables were jammed into every cranny to seat everyone. The quiz included a round on Human Rights. This year had a lot of choice for Human Rights questions with the shooting of the innocent Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes, the arrest of 82 year old Walter Wofgang under the Prevention of Terrorism Act for heckling and the government plans to hold people for up to three months with no trial.

A Packed Pinder Hall

Supper this year was not the usual stuffed baked potatoes.  It was decided to have a change and so a mixed cheese board and paté with French bread was served. Also there were three salads, tomato, couscous and a green leaves one, which gave a very colourful look to the tables, which had been decorated with red tablecloths. Unfortunately the green serviettes had disappeared, so kitchen towel had to be substituted. There was even vinaigrette and pickle available

Helpers Busy in the Kitchen

Another innovation was that everyone was served with their supper.  All the helpers wore black to give a more up market feel to the proceedings. Supper was much appreciated, although the French bread ran out, at the end of the evening twenty extra baguettes were found still sitting in somebody's car!

The Colourful Salads

The wine flowed and judging by the noise everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The bar had also elevated their image by preparing a sheet explaining the attributes of the various wines on sale.  There was even gin and tonic on tap, which was available at a very low price.

The Amnesty Bar

There was the usual raffle and the quiz winners, which were Colin Robinson's table (surprise, surprise), were presented with Amnesty candles. Also the quiz master Liz Kwantes was presented with a bouquet of flowers much to her surprise and delight.
