It was the Cookham and Maidenhead branch of Amnesty's thirteenth annual quiz at the Pinder Hall on Friday 7th November. With nearly eighty people and an electronic scoring system everything was set for Colin Robinson the quizmaster to start on the round of questions.

Are We All Ready?

The quiz was also attended by Bob Corn Amnesty's Regional Organiser, who was very impressed with the group. He said he was trying to visit all of the groups in his area which stretched through, Bucks, Berks, Oxon, Beds and Herts. He said the real problem was getting volunteers, which seems to be a general problem for everyone nowadays not just Amnesty.

There was supper included in the price, recently this had been patés, cheeses and salads, but it had been decided to revert to baked potatoes which was met with great acclaim. There was a choice of tuna, cheese or baked beans or a mixture which some people thought was a good idea, along with coleslaw and salad. This was followed by the usual yummy deserts of which there was quite a variety, such as black forest gateau, lemon cheesecake and chocolate fudge cake. There was very little left over.

Perhaps the Wine Will Help?

The wine flowed and judging by the noise everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

There was a very good raffle including port, wines, chocolates and a fresh flower arrangement with regional organiser Bob Corn pulling the first ticket. The winners were announced, it was Mark Ashworth's team. Mark had been a previous Amnesty chairman.

Mike Copland reminded those attending that the 10th December this years marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  He called on everyone at the quiz to "light a candle at home on the 10th to remember the many people who are still suffering prison and torture just because of who they are or what they believe.

The evening raised just over £750 after costs for Amnesty. If you are interested in joining in with Cookham and Maidenhead Amnesty group click here
