Village Chistmas Charity Afternoon (3
December 2000) |

|
The
shops of Cookham Village were again open on Sunday afternoon 3 December
for their special Christmas Charity afternoon to help raise money for
local good causes. The event had been masterminded and organised by Alison
Parry of Kid 2 Kid and was opened by Bill Wyman, in spite of a bout of
laryngitis, who, some of you may remember, was a member of the Rolling
Stones. He brought his two young daughters with him and helped the cause
by selling his autograph. |

The festivities were opened
at 2.30pm and these were followed by seasonal entertainment, carol
singing, a wind band, a fair organ and a clown entertainer, plus a
Victorian carousel for the children. There were stalls selling
Cookham Society Christmas Cards, the Thames Valley Hospice had a tombola
and the RNLI were selling cards and gifts. The RNLI stall took a record £247,
the best ever. |

There was also lots to eat,
hot chestnuts were on sale, the 1st Cookham Scouts had a barbecue and
there was mulled wine and mince pies. |

There was a special visit by
Father Christmas arriving in the Cookham Fire Engine. It was noted that he
sat inside rather than on top though. There was an excellent raffle, with
lots of prizes. This was drawn towards the end of the afternoon, but
before this Betty Bond gave a short talk and thanked Alison Parry for all
her hard work in organising the afternoon and presented her with a bunch
of flowers. |

5.30pm Cookham High Street
was reopened after a very enjoyable afternoon. Even the weather was good
'much better than last year' someone was heard to say. |

Zephyr Wind Band Entertains

|
|
The main charities who will
be supported this year are Elizabeth House, (the Day Centre in Cookham
Rise), The Children's Society and the Cookham Medical Centre Donation
Fund. Thank you to Alison for making the afternoon so successful and
also for all the people who helped make it happen, the shopkeepers, the
entertainers, the Parish and Borough Councils, PPP Project Management, The
Odney Club, the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Cookham Fire Brigade,
Maidenhead and District Chamber of Commerce, Hitachi, the National
Trust, Pike Smith & Kemp, Fine Signs and the 1st Cookham Scouts, not
to mention many more. An event Cookham of which Cookham should be proud. |
