Live@the Church

(updated 2 August 2018)

With thanks to Mike Clark

Cookham’s Live Wire Productions staged a concert at the village’s ancient Holy Trinity Church on Saturday evening. It was the first of a series of four “Live@ The Church” events scheduled over the next 4 months and proved to be stunning success. Dramatic lighting changed the interior of the church from its traditional appearance into a softly lit performance space, even enhancing the building’s attractive mediaeval features.

The concert featured Anglo-Dutch singer, guitarist and songwriter Gitta de Ridder, whose programme of modern folkpop songs entranced an appreciative audience. Gitta was followed after the interval by Grizzly and the Grasshoppers. “Grizzly Rhys” Morgan plays “Roots and Blues” music at its foot stomping best, playing an amazing range of different guitars, with Neil Shervell joining him on drums and Matt Brace on bass guitar. Their music was an excellent contrast to the softer tones of Gitta de Ridder and completed an excellent programme of folk based music.

For the performers and most of the audience it was their first visit to Holy Trinity. Their reactions were universally positive, everyone loved the beautiful acoustics and the unique experience of a modern concert staged in an ancient church.

PCC member Mike Clark commented that the concert was part of a strategy to build on Holy Trinity’s superb reputation for music and to broaden the scope of musical events staged in the church. Saturday’s Live Wire concert follows regular concerts by the incomparable Cantorum Choir as well as performances by “The Candy Girls”, three jazz events and music from Stuart and Juliet Epps with John Church. Mike is most grateful to Cookham residents Trevor and Karen Davison of Live Wire Productions, whose professional sound, lighting and event management skills made the evening possible.

Live Wire will be producing a series of three further folk music themed concerts in the church on 22 September, 20 October and 24 November, all starting at 19.00hrs. Featured artistes will include “Fly Yeti Fly”, “Velvet and Stone”, Sam Green and Jonas and Jane. If last Saturday’s event is anything to go by they will be unmissable!
