We Will Remember Them

(4 October 2016)

When young men joined up to fight in the Great War, a young gardener and bellringer from Hall’s Place, at the corner of  School Lane and Sutton Road, Cookham was among them.

Private Charles White, Royal Berkshire Regiment aged 22 died October 2nd 1916 in the Battle of the Somme . His body was never recovered, and he is remembered with 72,000 other missing on the Thiepval Memorial, and the war memorial in Cookham.

On Sunday October 2nd 9 bellringers from Holy Trinity Church , Cookham honoured his memory by ringing a 50 minute quarter peal.

“It was special to remember a brave young gardener and bellringer in this way” says tower captain Marcia Dieppe “and we are pleased that the third bell is engraved with Charles White name.”
