Cantorum’s concert “Faire is the Heaven” on Saturday 27th March at St John the Baptist Church in Cookham Dean showcased some beautiful English choral music, ranging from Byrd to Britten. The choir was conducted by their guest conductor Michael Sanderson.

The concert was a delight to listen to and the music, composed mainly for a small choir, was well suited to the voices of the choir. Of special note was the choir’s dramatic rendering of This Worldes Joie by Arnold Bax that opened the second half of the concert.

The choir showed what it was capable of in John Tavener’s settings of ‘The Tyger’. This is a dramatic and demanding work which for some of the time is in 14 parts, no mean feat for a choir of just over 28 singers. Julia Millard sang the soprano solo beautifully in Britten cantata “Rejoice in the Lamb”.

A Big Applause

Cantorum Choir’s next concert is on Friday 30th April when they will sing The Reluctant Dragon at Taplow Court . Elizabeth Toye has just been appointed Cantorum’s new conductor and this will be her first concert with the choir. The next concert she will conduct is on 19th June at Holy Trinity Church , Cookham.
