The Crown, Cookham Village

Posted 25 May 2005

Have just heard that the Crown has been sold. Not sure how true this is, but it's not just a change of management, but a change of owners.

As an occasional to almost regular user of the Crown over the past 15 years, I would like to offer my opinion of the state of the Crown at present. Over the years the fortunes of the establishment have wavered depending on the tenant, but the view of it being a 'local' have definitely returned with the current landlady.

I agree that occasionally the behaviour of some regulars is not always exemplary (although for the vast majority of the time it is) and is unacceptable in an educated community such as ours. Noise levels are a very subjective issue and I personally try to respect the various signs put up around the pub requesting people to leave quietly.

I also concur with the general view of both the landlady and almost everybody who enters the pub that it is in need of urgent modernisation and significant cosmetic improvement. This includes suitable air conditioning as the air quality is atrocious (and I'm a smoker!). It's fairly obvious to regulars, local residents and visitors that the owners (Shire Taverns) have been taking the cream out of the takings with no investment back into the future of the pub.

The efforts by the current landlady to effectively manage the pub and integrate with the community have been beyond reproach. Recent activities have included a golf competition against other pubs, charity race nights and good old karaoke. There are always new things in the pipeline and she is always open to suggestions.

The trouble is whenever I go into the crown it just feels so unwelcoming and almost hostile - there seem to be a couple of "groups" of people in there trying to outdo each other with language and noise so we drank our beer and left

I dont go to the Crown all the time but when ever I have its been a very enjoyable experience. The Manager is a very pleasant and kind lady with a welcoming feeling.

It is dirty, rubbish around the front, back and sides, broken seats, dirty insides with very worn carpets and furniture, dirty broken ceilings, no control over the language or actions of the clientele and no considerations for the neighbourhood
