The first day of the Cookham Festival 21
April 2007. In spite of forecasts of snow and storms, it was a beautiful
warm day for the Big Spencer project, much to relief of the organisers.
The project was to paint a copy of Dinner on the Lawn by Stanley Spencer.
However 70 people were to do it, doing one piece each. It all started off
on Saturday morning at Holy Trinity School.

Most people set up in the main hall of the
school. Everyone picked up a canvas which was numbered and the plan was
that they should paint that part of the painting.

Rolf Harris was there to help and give
advice on how to use the paints and get the best possible results.
Josh Dorrington, one of the younger artists, was shown some techniques by
Rolf.

Rolf even gave advice to Juliette Palmer RA,
Cookham's well known artist, Juliette listened attentively to Rolf's
suggestions.

As well as the seventy artists there were
lots of helpers to show people where to set up their easels and where they
could get hold of paints and also the odd cup of coffee.

Some people decided to move outside as it
was such a lovely day and it was getting quite hot and noisy in the school
hall. A small group in the playing fields were working well as a team,
although one member had drawn the short straw with number 1 square which
was totally grey apart from a small square of black. Easy to paint though.
