Cookham's Meals on Wheels

(17 August 2004)

At the moment only four people in Cookham receive Meals on Wheels.  There has been a lot of press articles about the importance of Meals on Wheels as this is often the only opportunity some house bound people actually have of seeing a friendly face. Do any Cookhamites know of someone who may like to receive Meals on Wheels or is everyone in Cookham well provided for?

Meals on wheels are freshly cooked tasty meals usually consisting of a hot main course and a hot or cold sweet. Each course is delivered in an aluminium foil container and may be eaten directly from it or transferred on to a plate. The current cost is £1-90 per meal.

In addition to receiving a hot and nourishing meal, those being visited may gain peace of mind by receiving a regular visit from a friendly face.

Meals on Wheels has been around for many years and has changed a lot in that time. Gone are the days of volunteers driving around with large containers full of food and finding gravy covering the van at the end of the run. The fact that someone is coming to see those who are limited in their ability to cook for themselves is also useful in ensuring that people are coping in other areas too.

If you know of anyone who is elderly or housebound who might qualify for Meals on Wheels please contact: wmvolaction@aol.com for more information.
