BARBARA'S OXFAM FAST 2004

by Barbara Walmsley

(9 October 2004)

Barnary Walmsley- Photo by kind permission of the Maidenhead Advertiser It’s my 19th year outside Sainsbury’s for about 32 hours and not eating for 38 hours. (Water and a bit of powdered glucose excepted). The dates are November 5th, 6th and 7th and Oxfam’s beneficiaries and I need all the help we can get!

Here is the promised extract of the report from the health post in Goranboy in Azerbaijan visited by Charles and myself and funded from £5,000 of the fast money in 2002.

“The health post in the village was in a terrible condition; it was in a very old wooden room ( Ms Barbara Walmsley herself had witnessed it ). The medical staff couldn’t do necessary quality medical service in these conditions.  Considering all these, Healthy World, a local Non Governmental Organization (NGO ) established by Oxfam GB planned  to construct a new health post in this village.

Healthy World constructed the health post in 2002.  Construction works were completed within three months.  On September 9th, 2002 the health post was solemnly opened.  Ms. Barbara Walmsley supported it financially.  Healthy World provided construction materials and the community members did the construction work.

Now the health post consists of three rooms and one big hall.  The whole area is 92,4 square meters.  It’s surrounding yard was covered with metal- framed netting.

Afterwards Healthy World initiated health insurance system in order to do sustainable and quality community managed primary health care services.  1 Doctor and 8 medical nurses work at the health post. They conduct health education, vaccination, treatment of light diseases and timely identification of heavy diseases.  Medical staff tries their best efforts to serve people better being encouraged with the good working conditions created for them.  The health post was of great significance for the community members’ health conditions.

HUMAN STORIES.

Nazarov Niftulla, 35 years old man from Bakhchakurd community shared his satisfaction with Healthy World officers about the medical staff at the health post.

“I got brain trauma and my brother took me to the health post.  The Doctor did her best efforts to save me from the critical situation on time and then qualified neurologist was invited to treat me.  Till he came she did all necessary medical services on time.  Now I feel good.  My family is a member of health insurance and we highly appreciate the services of the newly constructed health post and the health insurance system

Before I didn’t use to consult the local doctor’s ambulatory because they didn’t have even normal elementary medical facilities or medicines.  But now thanks to Oxfam and Healthy World there is a very good health post and it has a good looking building and necessary medicines.  It is a really important progress in the solution of our community’s health problems”

Doctor Hijran, manager of the health post, writes,

“For 22 years I tried to provide people with high quality service using my knowledge and skills, but the conditions of our health post always caused problems for me.  One room health post that was constructed in 1956 was totally useless for medical services; there was no medical equipment and medicines.  Now we can offer quality medical services for patients by providing them with medical preparations and with an insurance system.  Now I am able to serve people to my fullest desire.  Therefore on behalf of the community I send my special thanks to Healthy World and it’s donor OXFAM.”

The mother of Aliyev Ismat said the following---

“Recently my child had fever and I urgently addressed to the modern local health post equipped with necessary medical facilities.  Doctor and other medical staff did medical aid to the child immediately.  The child’s temperature fell down and he got better.  After several days of ongoing treatment the child got rehabilitated.  Before we used to go to the centre of the region covering 30-40 kilometers because our local health post was out of order and was not able to provide normal medical services.  It caused additional  time waste and expenses.  Therefore most families suffered from these obstacles and the lack of timely medical services in health posts caused deterioration of health conditions of sick people.  I express my deep gratitude to the supporters of the health post in our village.”

If you would like to sponsor me please see me at church or send me a cheque made out to Oxfam  to Spindlewood, High Road, Cookham, SL6 9JT  (Tel 01628-522255).

.

It helps me so much if you see me before I see you!  Visiting, writing or phoning  people or trying to trip them up outside church takes an enormous amount of time and energy.
