CHURCHES TOGETHER IN COOKHAM

At 10.30am on 16th July a joint service of all the Cookham churches was held in the Cookham Millennium Pageant Marquee. It was entitled a Service of Thanksgiving and Hope.

Four hundred programmes had been printed, which was thought to be ample and there was seating for four hundred and fifty, but they came and came.  Soon the programmes were being rationed to one amongst three and then they ran out.  In the end over five hundred people were there.  The sides of the marquee had to be removed to accommodate everyone.

People in the boats heard the noise and came to see what was happening and joined in, as did those walking their dogs.  Some brought their own chairs, as only five hundred had been rented for the Millennium Pageant and they were all used.

John Copping from St John the Baptist, Cookham Dean, opened the service and was joined by Beatrice Quaye from Cookham Methodists, in welcoming everyone.  A banner of thanksgiving was then given by Desmond and Mary Wilton from St John the Baptist.  The opening prayer was read by the Leader from Holy Trinity Church.  This was followed by the first reading from Isaiah.  The reader was from St Elizabeth's Roman Catholic Church. A banner of hope for the future was then offered by the Ash family on behalf of St John the Baptist.  The second reading was read by a member of Cookham Methodist Church.  The Society of Friends then introduced a space for silence. The address was then given by the Right Reverend David Rossdale, Bishop of Grimsby

A chain of prayer from the present was offered by each of the churches in Cookham and the Millennium Resolution, which also appears by the Cookham Clock at the station, was read by the leader from the River Church.

The service finished with the hymn Cwm Rhondda, Guide me O thou Great Redeemer.  Everyone agreed that the whole service had been very moving and should be repeated again, not just at the next Millennium.
