Rotoract Helps El Salvador Quake Victims

(March 2001)

The Rotaract Club of Bourne End and Cookham have provided 4 AQUABOXES to stricken families in El Salvador. The boxes, which are capable of providing 33,000 litres of purified water in areas of greatest need, will be used by relief agencies to stem the tide of disease that occurs after major disasters such as the recent earthquake. In only 2 hours, purification tablets render the bacteria of killer diseases such as typhoid and cholera completely harmless, making the water totally safe to drink.

The AQUABOX project is the brainchild of a Rotary Club in Derbyshire, who work with relief agencies and airlines to get the boxes shipped out to areas of dire need in the shortest time possible.

Rebecca Hazell, Bourne End & Cookham Rotaract: “As a club, we do a lot of fundraising and community work in the local area. However, when you see major disasters in places such as El Salvador and India, you do tend to feel rather helpless. By using £1,000 of our fundraising monies to pay for the AQUABOXES, we can provide almost instant relief to the areas that need it most.”

As Rotaract is an organisation that promotes fun and friendship as well as community and fundraising work, Club members made sure that raising the £1,000 was enjoyable! Events such as a major pop and rock fundraising quiz have helped boost the coffers in recent months.

The Club meets 1st and 3rd Tuesdays in the month at Three Horseshoes, Flackwell Heath.
