SPENCER GALLERY AWARDED LOTTERY GRANT

(20 May 2004)

The Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham has been awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant of £29,300.

The grant will allow the Gallery's Trustees to commission advisers to provide conservation management, access and audience development plans.  The initial Project Planning cost is some £32,400 of which the HLF has granted a 90% award.  The remainder will be provided by the Gallery's Friends and its own funds.

It is hoped that these plans will lead to a substantial improvement project in the Gallery, a former Methodist Chapel which houses Spencer's renowned paintings and drawings.  The plans will assure Trustees and the HLF that the physical improvements to the Gallery are designed to protect fully the heritage associated with Spencer’s works as well as maximising public access to them.

Stuart Conlin (Chairman of the Gallery's Management Committee) and Dick Hurley (Chairman of the Gallery's Trustees) welcomed this news:  "Although the Gallery is financially self-supporting and run by volunteers we do not have the capital needed for these improvements which will ensure the conservation of these wonderful paintings and continued enjoyment of the Gallery's increasing number of visitors  who see Spencer's art in the unique context in the village where he lived and worked".
