Lord Astor was in Cookham to open the Stanley Spencer Gallery Summer Exhibition. Lord Astor is one of the Trustees of the Gallery and mentioned in his opening speech that the large painting facing people as they enter the gallery entitled Christ Preaching at Cookham Regatta (1959), was in fact commissioned by his father. However Stanley Spencer died before it could be completed. |

In addition to Lord Astor the opening was also attended by the Deputy mayor and our MP Theresa May, who is now Chairman of the Conservative Party. The Gallery was packed with Gallery Friends and it was an opportunity to catch up with gossip as well as see Spencer's wonderful paintings on display. |

| The Spencer Gallery's Summer Exhibition (18th April - 14th September 2003) will focus on Stanley Spencer's work as an official war artist in the 1940s at Lithgow's Shipyard on the Clyde. In Port Glasgow, Spencer felt at home with the close-knit community as he had with fellow soldiers in the previous war and with people in his native village Cookham. | ||||||||
