Cookham Day Centre was the brainchild of Elisabeth Sanders, who raised the money to buy and refurbish the house in the late 1970's.  The house had originally been the Police Station and the gate to the cells is now on display on the ground floor of the building.

The building was opened as a Day Centre at the beginning of the 1980's having been refurbished for use as a Day Centre.  The money was raised by the people of Cookham and the building was opened by Richard Baker.

Agnes Wetherall, who was one of the original members and still goes to Elisabeth House, talks about making curtains for the Day Centre and also running a handicraft class.  They obtained foam from the Cressex Estate in High Wycombe, which was cut up for them and could then be used for cushions.  They made cushion covers, aprons, cushions and lampshades amongst many other things.

One of the members actually remembers the Police Station as it used to be, as she was a policemen's wife and her husband was based at the old Police Station.

The Day Centre is open from 10.00am until 3.30pm from Monday until Friday excluding Public Holidays and is for the over 60's.  The cost of joining is £8 per year and it is open to everyone who lives in the area.  Tea and coffee are provided in the morning and also in the afternoon.  An excellent lunch is also available daily. Non members can drop in for a coffee in the morning.

Entertainment is often on hand, such as someone may come in and play the piano, so everyone can have a sing song. New clothes are on sale from someone who comes in to the Day Centre offering a good selection of items and second hand clothes are also regularly available.  There is a library upstairs with a good selection of books, magazines are provided and also games.  There is a lift to the first floor for those who are unable to walk up the stairs.

On Monday mornings a hairdresser visits Elisabeth House and on Monday afternoons there is an Art Group.  On Tuesday mornings a chiropodist visits and on Wednesday mornings there is a physiotherapist.  An Occupational Therapist is also being sought.  Between 1.30pm and 2.00pm on Wednesdays there is Christian Worship.  On Friday mornings you can have chiropody and manicures.

Elisabeth House also has a specially adapted bath which allows one to walk into it from the side so it is ideal for those who are unable to climb into a bath.

Cookham Day Centre is always looking for VOLUNTEERS to help out either on a regular basis or as a backup for when people are on holiday or ill.

Regular volunteers are needed for two hours a week in three shifts:

10am-12.00pm - help with teas and coffees and prepare tables for lunch

12.00pm - 2.00pm - serve lunch and wash up

2.00pm - 4.00pm - help with teas and clean the centre

Volunteer DRIVERS are also needed to bring people to the Day Centre between 10.00am and 10.30am and to pick them up around 3.00pm.  Regulars are needed to make a run a week, while backups are always needed.

Cookham Day Centre is also available to rent out in the evenings and weekends.  This is mainly for meetings and small fundraising bazaars and only to local organisations.

If you are interested in hiring the Day Centre please call on 01628 527621.
