Crime: 21 January 2008

Most areas had a very quiet weekend. We had another Distraction Burglary in Knowl Hill using the police officer ID. Fortunately nothing was stolen, but the aggrieved was only 25 years old. The men are not in police uniform, but smartly dressed and very well spoken, saying they are from CID. They flash some form of ID. I have been in conversation with the PEC, who say they will always verify if a person at your door is in fact a police officer. THE SOLUTION - If you are in doubt, always ask for their shoulder number and say you are going to phone the PEC for verification. The PEC can reassure you immediately - or send a police car. If they refuse to give you a shoulder number or even have to think about it - you should immediately be suspicious.
