Crime: 6 February 2008

Can I thank all those that helped to make the last of our Neighbourhood Policing Launches in Riverside and Belmont a success. Over 200 residents turned up and I can confirm their priorities are Anti Social Behaviour, Speeding and Parking.

The police have had a call from a concerned resident in Horton who has received two suspicious calls from companies trying to get her bank account details. The first was from a company thanking her for a donation, the second said they were a child action group again thanking her for a donation. When she said she had not made a donation, she was informed that there would be a cancellation fee of £49. She was confident they did not have her bank details to charge her, but an elderly or vulnerable person could have been fooled. Please, let all your members know about these scams. Bank details must never be given out on the phone. If you receive a call from a bank asking for confirmation - you should be immediately suspicious - your bank already has all this information and would never ask for it over the phone for any purpose. Anyone with email knows this happens al the time and you simply bin them.

Scam letters are also a problem and several Co-ordinators send me the ones they receive - loads. They look really good, with seals and very official looking headings. IF YOU HAVE NOT ENTERED A COMPETITION, YOU CANNOT WIN ! If you have not had dealings with the Spanish Lottery, they have no reason to contact you - bin them !
