Crime: 6 March 2008
SCAMS: Scams seem to be on the increase and please remember we had a resident last week in Maidenhead that handed money over. Can everyone warn elderly and vulnerable people about scams. I am organising some leaflets from the Office of Fair trading which are excellent:- 'How to recognise a Scam', 'Can you stop the person you care for from being scammed'. These will be put into public libraries, council offices and local police station reception areas etc etc.. If you want some immediately to deliver to your members, you can telephone 0800 389 3158 and order them direct. You can view them on an excellent website which contains a massive amount of good advice:
http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/watch_out/scams/
It also answers a question we have had for a long time - who do you tell about letters / emails / phone calls you receive? Bin them of course but there is an online reporting page which they encourage people to fill in. If we all did that, it would help them enormously.

Re thefts of lead - more was stolen from a church in Dedworth yesterday. Fortunately it was piled up in the car park ready to go when the offenders were disturbed and left it behind. Can everyone, have a look around where they live. If buildings have lead visible from the road, please keep your eye on it - particularly if you live close to public buildings churches, village halls etc. at weekends, when they are generally unoccupied. Any suspicious activity should be reported to the police immediately please on the 0845 8 505 505 number recording van number plates descriptions etc. If they are legitimate, they will not mind answering a few questions from the police. |
