Crime: 26 March 2009

First: We have had a string of burglaries over the past week or so, particularly in Cox Green through insecure rear doors ! Apparently people are not locking up their houses, when they go to bed at night. The thieves are walking around to the rear of houses and just trying back doors. If they are unlocked, they simply walk in and help themselves to small items - bank cards, handbags, cash etc. This is so easy to prevent and I am sure you are tired of my saying please lock your doors and windows at night ! It seems pretty basic advice, but we are getting victims who must feel awful the next day.

Second: I had a call this morning from a co-ordinator to say he had received a phone call from a security company offering him a home security survey and asking him about his home security. Can everyone please remember - if you do get one of these calls - you have every security device available to mankind installed in your property, including the best burglar alarm on the market ? You never know who is on the other end of the line ! These calls are taking place every day, please do not give any personal information about yourself or the security of your home, to anyone you do not know !

Third: An Efit is being made of the Distraction Burglar from Coln Close yesterday. As soon as it is ready, I have been asked to circulate it via Ringmaster in case the man called on anyone you know.

Fourthly: We have now purchased a mobile ANPR. This is being used almost every day on all major routes to where we feel crimes are occurring ! All cars passing are checked against the Police National Computer database. It helps us if we know certain offenders are moving into this or that areas at particular times ! If you did see a group of police officers standing beside the road yesterday (Marlow Road / Furze Platt Road), we are not wasting their time doing speed checks, those are organised quite differently, they are more than likely involved in an ANPR operation which can move around the area very speedily. You may well see the camera if you are aware of it, before you see the police officers themselves - poised to stop and talk to anyone that pings up on the computer. You will see more and more of them as we block off the roads into Maidenhead from potential offenders. They will soon learn they cannot drive around this area with impunity and move elsewhere.

Fifthly: There was a lot of car crime last week and into the weekend. I have tried below to give a flavour of where this took place but there is not space to put in all of it. 2 things - please do not leave anything whatsoever in cars in the affected areas for the time being. That includes items that have no intrinsic value - sunglasses for instance. They are just something for a thief. They are willing to smash your windows for a small handful of loose change - if that puts it into perspective. That is why it is so important for you to call us if you see anyone acting suspiciously around parked cars. If they try a door handle, please 999 it immediately. If they are just hanging around suspiciously use the 0845 8 505 505. You won't know that we have just had calls about thefts from a road nearby and that cars have been broken into by x wearing this and that. Your follow up calls locates that person for us - don't think about it - do it !
