Crime: 28 September 2009

Still very quiet and crime over the weekend well down on last year.

Our Neighbourhood Watch members never cease to amaze me. I ask for some suggestions - the use of TV screens in public areas to promote crime prevention messages and what a fantastic response I have received. Several members have asked if I would like them to follow it up - yes please. The others will be followed up by our Neighbourhood Teams. Brilliant suggestions, message content suggestions which are really helpful.

Things to be aware of - Evenings drawing in, time to get those timers sorted out if it is dark before you get home from work. If you don't have any, think about getting several over the next few months. Which lights to leave on ? When your house is occupied, go outside and have a look. It will be more than the hallway and an upstairs landing ! Set the timers in those rooms on side lights. In a downstairs room, just audible from the front door, have the timer set on a talk radio station.

Lastly, Many of you say you had secured your car before leaving it, but find it broken into without any damage. There is a way that this can happen, particularly if you have one of the modern electronic keys. There are gadgets on the market that can jam the signal, if you simply point and click your car to lock it. If you have an electronic key, you must check the car door handles every time you lock it, to make sure your car is in fact locked. If there is no damage, you will have problems with your insurance company, as they will insist you left your car unlocked and you will have no means of proving otherwise.
