Crime: 6 January 2010

We had a burglary yesterday in Eton Wick. Burglary through insecure rear door - purse and credit cards stolen. The house had a burglar alarm that was not turned on, as well as security cameras that were not working. If you have such systems, please make sure you use them. Our opportunist thieves do not generally break into houses that have alarms. What they will do, is break a window or force a door, to see if the system is turned on - as so many people simply do not bother. If the alarm does not go off, they are in. If it does, they immediately make off. Anyone who has been burgled and subsequently installed an alarm, knows to use it !! If you have a pet and there is evidence outside of a pet - a catflap - as far as a thief is concerned, the chances are, you won't set your alarm and in most cases, that's true. So its even more important to set it in that case.

OLDFIELD & BRAY:

4/1 - 5/1 Bray Bank. Shed break - mower and 2 leaf blowers stolen. It would have taken 2 men and a large van to take the items - and it would have been hard to remove the chains and padlocks.

5/1 11.50 p.m. Shoppenhangers Road. Car windscreen wipers vandalised.

4/1 - 5/1 Conningsby Lane, Fifield, house being renovated. Burglary through forced front door - house fittings stored in the conservatory stolen. Thieves then moved to the garage where they drank some alcohol

Let's hope the snow and weather are protecting us, but please remember, if you have a burglar alarm, it is useless if you do not set it. As we have just had Christmas, there are games consoles, SAT NAVs, IPODs and new laptops about and the thieves will be looking for easy pickings. If you have a beloved pet, it must be placed in a secure area and alarms set for the ground floor, when you go to bed at night and for the entire house, if you pop out to the shops.

The number as always - 0845 8 505 505 or Crimestoppers in complete confidence on 0800 555 111.
