Crime: 22 January 2010

Generally about now, we see Distraction Burglaries appearing on the crime sheets. We have had some suspicious incidents recently, so can everyone be on their guard and without alarming them, warn all our elderly residents, not to let anyone in their home that they do not know, or who has not made an appointment.

Our scene investigators have sent me the following reports:

1. On the 19th January at 6 p.m. in Iver, 2 Asian men wearing hi viz jackets, called at a house saying that they were from the Government, and would provide free loft insulation, but they needed to check the age of the owner and wanted to see their passport. The owner let them in and went to look for the passport. When they came back the 2 men had left via the back door. Nothing was stolen.

2. 15/12 Salter's Close, Maidenhead. The doorbell rang at 2 p.m. and the elderly owner answered it. A man was there who jumped back in surprise, at the door being answered. He immediately asked 'is Henry coming out' ? The owner said no-one of that name lived there and the man immediately made off, acting very suspiciously indeed. He is described as white, English accent, 30 - 35, 5'11'' - 6', average build, black hair and eyebrows, his skin was dirty and he had a small silver hooped earring. He was wearing a black woolly hat, black jacket, black woolly gloves, black track suit bottoms and black boots.

Remain alert - their aim is to catch you off guard. If anything like this has happened to you please let me know on my intel line:

When at home, or going out please think about our opportunist thieves who are out and about just walking around, looking for people to make a mistake and perhaps go out, leaving a window open, a back door unlocked or something in their car. In the police, we deal with crime prevention using a triangular model. Thief, Target, Guardian. Remove any one of these and an offence cannot take place. We can do nothing about the thieves, they are just out and about. We can do something about the other two. Securing our property makes sense and making sure we are observant is the last. If you see someone acting suspiciously in your road, go and have a look, pretend to be weeding your front garden, make sure the person is aware, they have been observed. They will move on. Then phone it through to us on the PEC number as intelligence - 0845 8 505 505. Or if it has happened, on my intel line:

Lots of on street car crime, as opposed to pub car parks. Eyes peeled when walking, or driving around. Anyone trying car door handles, petrol caps or climbing about under a car is an immediate 999 please ! Please think about forensics. If a lad has been down a road trying door handles / petrol caps - he will have left fingerprints. If we can identify those cars and get them soco'd, it would help us enormously. These are 999 so that we can get there quickly, to preserve the evidence.

Please do your bit to help us.

The number as always - 0845 8 505 505 or Crimestoppers in complete confidence on 0800 555 111.
