Crime: 12 March 2010

You may be aware that Google Maps have this week released Street View for this area. Not only do people now have a satellite view of our homes from above showing perimeter details in great detail, but they can now see the street view. They can walk along your road, look up your driveways, see if you have an alarm box / CCTV, what cars are on the driveway, proximity of neighbours, side access etc. etc. from the comfort of their own home. If you have not used the system, go to Google Maps, type your post code into the search and then zoom in. The detail is absolutely amazing. If there is a stick with a little orange man displayed on the screen, Street View is probably available. Click and drag him to you road and watch the transformation. It is a

photographic view anyone would have, walking along your road and standing outside your house. This was done about a year ago and you may have seen the transit van driving slowly along your road with a large sphere on the roof - a 360 degree camera. All car number plates on driveways have been pixellated and faces of pedestrians blurred. It does clearly show the cars usually parked on the drive, gates etc. May I suggest if you do not have an alarm, now would be a good time to get one if you live in an area targeted for burglaries. If you cannot afford one - a dummy box and perhaps dummy CCTV camera would be a good idea. These are readily available from shops like Maplins and very easy to put up. Door locks should be polished, NW stickers put up in all front doors / windows, hedges trimmed to give good views of your front doors, house names and numbers clearly displayed at the roadside, so that strangers do not have an excuse to walk up and down driveways - 'looking for chez-nous' ! Please look at your home online - does the photo show any obvious weaknesses in your security ?

I have been told by my techie son that you can have your home removed from the photograph and I am examining exactly how to do that.

Hi Jeff,

The bag may contain crucial evidence and stolen items. It will help enormously with the investigation. Please phone the PEC on 0845 8 505 505 asking for contact PC 5544 Ward with any information.
