Crime: 22 June 2010

Crime still very quiet.

Safe as Houses - hundreds of the SELECTA DNA signs have arrived and you will see them going up over the next few weeks. The company have evidence to suggest burglaries are reduced by 80% in areas the product has been used. We will be mapping the location of all signs and overlaying crime maps, to see if we have a similar effect. If you are happy to put one up in your road, please email me on the intel line with your address and I will send one to you with the plastic straps.

Lycra – has been so successful for bikes, Caroline and I are now thinking of doing the same for SAT NAVs. We won’t be postcoding them. If your car is parked up somewhere – you are obviously not at home, and punching your postcode into the SAT NAV, could lead them to your house. We will be designing a sticker that is hi viz, but also nice enough for people to want to attach to their bright shiny expensive SAT NAVs. It will probably just say something like ‘this SAT NAV is coded on Immobilise.com’. The serial number can then be recorded on Immobilise.com – a very simple procedure.

I am in the process of sending out new ‘LYCRAAAAH’ registration forms, to all those that have asked for marking kits. To save time I have also attached the form to this message. Even if you have not yet asked for marking stickers but would like them, please complete one for each bike, attaching a photo – JPEG. Format not BMP (too big).
Please email them back to Ken my volunteer, so that my inbox in not filled:

If you have not yet asked for the kit, just add in the covering email, how many you need. The process is simplicity itself. One sticker is yellow and you write your postcode and house number / first 3 letters of you house name on it. You attach it to the bottom of the seat bar, with the yellow sticker point outwards, so that it is visible as you cycle around. The rest of the strip is removed from the paper backing and wound around the bar to protect the writing. It is difficult to remove as it breaks into pieces. A dayglo sticker goes on the cross bar or somewhere else that is very visible.
