Crime: 19 January 2011

I have been watching the TV show Scambusters. They show you how the Waterboard, antique dealer, and the car scams work. This should be compulsory viewing for all members of NHW. Last night I watched an old episode re purchasing cars. You advertise your car for sale. 2 wealthy men turn up with a driver. They ask to test drive the car – in this case a Porsche. As security, they will leave their driver and car behind. When they arrived, the driver parked in such a way, that the drive would be blocked. After the 2 men have left, he suggests he move the car…………You know the rest – BUT, it doesn’t stop there ! They drive the Porsche to another purchase of an even more expensive car. This time they hand the keys to the seller and say they will leave the Porsche as security. They are never seen again and all that seller has, is a stolen Porsche on the driveway. Sounds really simple – but it could happen to any of us. The programme i s using the same method as I use, to pre-warn you about criminal techniques. Once you have seen or heard about it, you are much more likely to be on your guard and smell a rat. How many of you fall for the Nottingham Knockers now ? The Waterboard scam – ‘we are working down the road and have cracked a pipe’, ‘can we come in and check water pressure’. They could have a hundred stories, but you are now sensitised to them and would become suspicious very quickly. I mention this because we had a car stolen in Ascot yesterday – a Mercedes CLK. The purchasers turned up, asked to test drive it and were handed the keys – you know the rest.
