Crime:
28 February 2011
A timely reminder from a co-ordinator These calls have not gone away
but appear to be increasing:
Jeff:
Just to let you know, I have just had an unsolicited call, (it isn't the
first) from a company that claims to sort out computer problems remotely.
The man called himself Charlie Brown and claims that the company is
approved by Microsoft. He also claims to have had a report from Microsoft
that your computer is running slowly. He then guarantees to resolve all
the problems and remove any viruses. His English is near unintelligible,
but he is very, very pushy (I put the phone down on him once. He called me
back and was extremely insistent. His aim is to get your credit / debit
card payment details. During the call you can hear lots of other people in
the background, who appear to be making similar calls to other
unsuspecting victims, elsewhere in the UK. It seems as if he is going
through an Ascot phone book. He calls you by your name, which possibly
gives his call credence.
Under no circumstances should anyone give any information whatsoever to
anyone that cold calls. The aim is your card details, and to get remote
control of your computer. If you allow him access to your computer and
its hard drive, you have no idea what he could do or what spyware
he could install there.
I know this has been covered before, but I just thought this was worth
mentioning again. And it might be worth advising people that if they have
a problem with their computer, ask friends or relatives who they have used
before to resolve issues and who they would recommend and rely on, rather
than trusting a bloke on another continent who happens to phone you out of
the blue.
