Crime: 9 August 2011

As there has been virtually no crime across the area in the last 24 hours, I am taking this opportunity to send a joint message.  This will show you where the little crime we are suffering is taking place which might emphasise the need to report everything to us.  So often we hear about suspicious vans / cars / people in an area after a crime has taken place when we are doing house to house enquiries.  We need to know – BEFORE THE CRIME HAS TAKEN PLACE.  One of our members sent me a newsletter from Wiltshire – the relevant page is attached – they seem to have this problem too !!!

MAIDENHEAD:

BISHAM, COOKHAM, HURLEY, THE WALTHAMS, LITTLEWICK GREEN & KNOWL HILL:

We still have people from outside the area parked up in Datchet.

CLEWER, DEDWORTH & OAKLEY GREEN:

8/8 – 9/8  Monday 5.30 p.m. / Tuesday 7.20 a.m.  Dry cleaners, Dedworth Road – window smashed.

CLEWER EAST & PARK:

I have received this from our Allotment Watch:

I went to our allotment at Asher, Hatchet Lanebehind the British Legion this afternoon and found our shed broken into.

A Ryobi petrol strimmer has been stolen but other manual tools untouched.

A fellow allotmenteer told me that several sheds had broken into and a petrol rotovator and a lawn mower and some tools stowed in a top of the range fishing seat/box, had also gone.

There may well be other stuff as well.

The last time we visited our allotment was 01Aug2011- so I don't know when this happened.

I called TVP - they were unaware of any break-ins at this site. I have tried to get the others to report their loss, but have only been able to speak directly to one of them.

8/8  Monday 12.10 lunchtime.  Clewer New Town.  The owner was trimming his hedge and put the trimmer down to examine the other side.  When he returned, the trimmer was gone.

7/8  Sunday X 2 Legoland.  Late reports of catalytic converters having been stolen – both Citroen Picassos.  One owner did see a suspicious 4X4 driving around the car parks nearby, with 4 lads inside, wearing Hi Viz jackets.

SCAMS:

The Chinese scam letter is back with a vengeance.  Please tell everyone you know to simply bin them without even bothering to read them.

BT Scam:

This has been reported to me by one of our members

I received a call from a 'representative' of BT, informing me that he  was disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill.
He demanded payment immediately of £31.00 or it would be £ 118.00 to re-connect at a later date.

The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental!
I asked the guy's name - he gave me the very 'English' John Peacock with  a very 'African' accent - & phone number - 0800 0800 152.

Obviously the fellow realized I didn't believe his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up &
try phoning someone - he would dis-connect my phone to prevent this. AND HE  DID

My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again.

Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT.   I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card,  there & then.  I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for  BT.    He hung up.

I dialed 1471 - number withheld - I phoned his fictitious 0800 number - not recognized..   So I phoned the police to let them know. I wasn't the first! It's only
just started apparently, but it is escalating.   Their advice was to let as many people as possible know of this scam.  The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's  real, so please make as many friends & family aware of this.

How is it done?
This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have been 0800 800 152which takes you through to BT Business.
The cutting off of the line is very simple, he stays on the line with  the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying.
(This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it).

When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back.  You could almost be convinced!

The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool many.

By the way this is not about getting the cash as this would not get past
merchant services - it is all about getting the credit card details
which include the security number, so that it can be used for far larger
purchases.

The next one is a little unusual, but we do get it from time to time.  It is in fact a virus that infects someone’s computer.  It then directs this email to be sent to everyone in the personal address book.  It is often quite distressing to receive these as you may well know the names the virus uses:

'Hope you get this on time, I made a trip to Aberdeen, Scotlandand had my bag stolen from me with my passport and credit cards in it. The embassy is willing to help by letting me fly without my passport, I just have to pay for a ticket and settle Hotel bills. Unfortunately for me, I can't have access to funds without my credit card, I've made contact with my bank but they need more time to come up with a new one. I was thinking of asking you to lend me some quick funds that I can give back as soon as I get in. I really need to be on the next available flight'.

'I can forward you details on how you can get the funds to me. You can reach me via email or on Blue Islandhotel front desk phone, the numbers are, +447031804805 or +447031804806'.

I await your response....
Anna
