Crime: 24 October 2011

First. We have had a case of ‘Dodgy builders’ in Old Windsor over the weekend. The amount involved was several thousand pounds. If you see a skip outside an elderly neighbour’s house, ladders going up, builders vans etc. Please make discrete enquiries. IN THIS CASE THEY SAID THERE WAS WORK TO BE DONE ON THE ROOF - WHICH OF COURSE, THE OWNER COULD NOT CHECK.  If you are concerned that builders seem to be in the house, but nothing seems to be being done, have a word with your PCSO – through me if necessary jeffrey.pick@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk – they can go and make sure everything is in order. Dodgy builders usually have several ‘jobs’ on the go at any one time and they flit from one to the other. If an elderly neighbour needs any work done, they can always phone Louise at Repair With care on 01628 545 000. She has a list of Trustworthy Tradesman (only for those of pensionable age, I am afraid). She also has Brian and a Handy van at a very reasonable hourly charge, for small household jobs.

Secondly, I have had a reply from one of our members offering to help anyone struggling or who wants to attempt to write a newsletter:

Hi Jeff
I am happy to volunteer my time to help produce newsletters, publicise NHW info for anyone interested. I’ve been work
ing in marketing for more than 25 years and have a little bit of spare time on my hands that I’d like to put to use in supporting my local community. Whilst I’ve never physically produced a newsletter, I have written plenty and can help work out what will be of interest and how to craft messages. I am sure there must be some free software available that helps people produce good-looking newsletters without having professional tools.

Helen

Bikes are still being stolen. As you will see below, the owners made one mistake – leaving them unsecured in a back garden – sometimes for the first time, rather than locking them away out of sight. It is amazing how often this happens on the one time, you forget to lock it up. The same happens for cars and houses – the one night you forget to lock the back door / patio doors / conservatory / leave a downstairs window open – it happens ! Don’t let it be you.

GOOD NEWS – 9 men are presently in custody, suspected of stealing lead ! 3 were seen by security in Maidenhead wheeling a quantity of lead in a supermarket trolley. They were followed and the police searched their premises recovering a large quantity of lead. If you see anything like this – your first instinct must be to call the police – you will not be bothering us.

Next a Theft from a car in Datchet: The owner of a car woke up to find the boot of his car slightly open and the glove box down. Nothing stolen. The owner was sure they had locked the car, but there is no damage. I have mentioned on several occasions that there are signal jammers out there that can interfere with the signal from your key fob to your car. If this happens, the car’s security systems are confused – it has not received an uninterrupted signal from your key – and therefore does nothing. If you lock your car using your car fob, you must watch for the lights to flash / car to beep and then check a door handle – JUST TO MAKE SURE.

24/10 Monday midnight. Brock Lane. CCTV caught the image of 3 men pushing a supermarket trolley filled with lead ! The police attended immediately and saw the men entering a property. They pursued them. A large amount of lead has been recovered – 9 men were arrested. Charging the men is always difficult, as we have to identify and prove the individual pieces of lead are stolen. If you have recently had lead stolen, would it be identifiable ? Might it have paint on, which matches your home / surroundings ? Do you have exact measurements ? If so, please let me know – jeffrey.pick@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk
