Crime:
8 February 2012
I
have received this from one of our members:
Hi Jeff,
Thank you very much for the Ringmaster emails that you send out. It is
very useful to be aware of what is happening crime wise and the
information on scams is excellent. I have had one computer repair call to
date - but knew exactly what to do when the call came in.
I may be missing something obvious, but I can't see how to go about adding
new subscribers to the your email list. Would it be possible to add a note
explaining what the procedure is to get onto your subscription list?
Many thanks,
Mike
It is very simple – anyone can
email me at the address below with their name address, telephone / mobile
number, plus email address and I will put them on the system. OR, they can
go online to tvpcommunitymessaging.org and register themselves very
easily.

SCAMS:
I have received this one from Sarah:
Subject: TERRIBLE ORDEAL!!!................Holly & Family
I'm writing with tears in my eyes,my family and I came down here to
(Madrid) Spain, for a short vacation unfortunately we were mugged at the
park of the hotel we stayed, all cash credit cards and cell were stolen off
but luckily for us we still have our passports with us.
I have been to the embassy and the Police here but they're not helping
issues at all and our flight leaves pretty soon from now but we're having
problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us leave
until we settle the bills. Please be so kind to reply back so I can tell
you what to do and how to get some cash to us.
I'm freaked out at the moment.
Holly
This is the result of a virus that
infects your hard drive and sends this message – filling in the name
blanks - to everyone in your personal address book. Bin it – even though
it is distressing
Next from Talk Talk – apparently:
Jeff,
Can you pass this one on in your Newsletter. It is another quite
professional SCAM. I delight myself in making up account names and filling
in the proforma but in reality folk need to be aware of this –it is
quite clever! I don’t know if you have links to the Cyber security
community but this and other Scams could be bought to their attention?

Confirmation from another member re the Fedex scam:
Hello Jeff,
I was interested in the report from one of the members about a FedEx scam.
I had an identical one (except the track shipment no. was different). I
had been expecting a parcel "by the end of January" so nearly
replied to it but didn't as I didn't recognise the Track shipment No. I
forwarded it to the "Abuse @ Fedex" email address asking if it
was genuine on the day I received it, 30th January, but had no reply. On
the 2nd Feb I phoned FedEx to learn this was a scam. The moral of this is,
don't rely on FedEx's emails for confirmation of email scams, but try to
phone them!
Best wishes,
Chris
MEMBERS ADVICE:
This is really good advice from someone that works for DHL:
Hi Jeff,
Re; the FedEx scam they try all the big four such as DHL, FedEx,
UPS, TNT. I know because I work for DHL. We get the same thing.
Here's the thing;-
We don’t ask for e-mails when we ship anything.
We only have a name, address, and telephone number, so if you get an
e-mail about a shipment collection it’s a scam.
Don’t reply to the email. If in doubt call the company directly.
Kind Regards,
Simon
