Advice re metal thefts has been prepared by Anne Chalmers our Crime Reduction Advisor and is attached at the bottom of this message - the blue link !

Some advice just sent out to Windsor:
9/2 Thursday 9 p.m. / 10 p.m. Dedworth Road. Burglary via forced window. The thieves tried to tamper with the alarm sensors, but the alarm sounded immediately and they made off grabbing a laptop. Thieves will never stay if an alarm sounds. If you have been inside a house when a modern alarm sounds – you will know why. 99% of the time, opportunist thieves will know nothing about alarms and avoid them, choosing more simple targets – unless - there is a chance the owner has not set the alarm ! The usual reason for this is pets ! So if there is any evidence of a pet visible from outside the house, they will break a window. If the alarm sounds they make off – if not !!!!!
9/2 Thursday 11 p.m. School, Eton Road, Datchet. Entry via window – alarm sounded and the offender immediately made off through the front door. This should not happen ! If the external doors had all been double locked using a mortise lock, he would not have been able to get out that way, causing them to panic. They would have to exit as they entered, increasing the chances of them leaving forensic evidence behind !!!
9/2 Thursday 3.40 p.m. / 7.35 p.m. York Road. Burglary via forced rear conservatory and window. Coins, laptop, jewellery box and contents, camcorder & camera stolen. Please make sure valuable and sentimental jewellery is hidden in a place that would take an opportunist thief more than 5 minutes to find. It should never be left in a jewellery box on a dressing table nor the bedside cabinets – the first place a thief looks. You know your house best. Hide it where you can easily get at it and will remember !

MEMBERS ADVICE:
Hi Jeff

I don’t really know why the wider community out there don’t know about websites like Snopes, or Hoax-Slayer for example. Fortunately I’ve worked in businesses where the IT jockeys have not only made me embarrassed, when I have crashed the system by mistake, but also shown me what to do if I am unsure and something has got passed the firewall, especially at home.
You can easily access these websites and type in the duff e-mail subject and usually find out it’s a scam. Quick, easy and free. Both sites have FedEx etc and Hoax-Slayer has TalkTalk. So if you aren’t sure about your e-mail you can check with a couple of service providers before deleting the offending e-mail. Simples!

Stephen
You can also just Google some of the wording (copy and paste it into the search bar) from a suspected hoax email and you will get all the details – always the first line of defence.

PHONE BARRING:
Hi Jeff

I've just read about the phone scams that people are getting.

You may like to let people know that they can subscribe free to the telephone preference service. It is a government owned site. The free opt out service enabling you to record your preference on the official register and not receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls.

It just takes a few mins to register and after just 28 days people should start noticing a gradual decline of nuisance and marketing calls. I registered about 12 years ago and it still works.

www.tpsonline.org.uk

You can also stop the silent marketing calls. If you want to reduce these types of calls there is a separate service called Silent CallGard. You can register with them by calling 0844 3722325. This is an automated service but it did stop my silent nuisance marketing calls. This one though you do need to renew every year.

If any marketing calls do come through people just need to let the caller know that they are on the telephone preference list and that is is illegal for them to be calling them and they need to remove you from their calling list. They quickly apologise.

Do spread the word. If there are elderly people their family and neighbours could help them by registering for them on line.
