MEMBERS ADVICE:
Jeff,

In quite a few of your recent messages you have had people report the email scams. Here are some basic ways to spot if an email is not genuine.

A scam email will typically have one or more of these characteristics

Generic greeting. In almost all cases they will not use your real name because they don’t know you, it will say something like Dear customer, Dear online user or Dear ‘email address’. This shows they do not know who you are. Any direct email from a genuine organisation you deal with will know and use your real name. If the email does not have your name, delete it.

Request for information. It will say they want you to send them some information, usually for verification reasons. A genuine organisation knows your details they would not have to ask you for them by email.

Threat. It may say that if you do not reply, some undesirable action may take place, such as closing or suspending your account. Genuine organisations do not act in this way.

Suspicious link or attachment. To provide the information, they want you to click on a web link or open an attachment. The link will not be a real link to the organisation. Often it is to a fake site where it will ask you to provide your personal details, or take you to a site that is trying to sell you something or display undesirable content. If they ask you to open an attachment, this can often be a way of loading a virus onto your computer.

You may also notice bad spelling and grammar.

If in ANY doubt, do not action the email. Instead telephone the real company and ask them if it is genuine. In almost every case it will not be. Remember, if calling, do not use a telephone number quoted in the email, find out the telephone number yourself through the web or directory enquiries.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Paul

Our grateful thanks to Paul for making this simple and understandable.
