You're aware that I send on messages to other people on our estate. Several recently haven't been delivered, because other people's security has picked up on the wording of the scam in the message - for instance the ‘dear friend’ scam.
I'll try next time to leave out SCAM in the subject line.

Maggie

From Dorothy – The Microsoft scam is still happening:
I have received a phone call from someone called Rose, who told me I had a problem with my computer. I said I couldn't deal with it at the moment and she gave me a telephone number. I have no intention of calling the number.
Dorothy.

Generally the number is abroad and it doesn’t work anyway.

Lastly a call from Claire. Her mother who moved a year or so ago, has received some re-directed post – the Hong Kong / Chinese scam letter – addressed to her husband who died 4 years ago. The database they are us8ng is therefore not current, but many years old !

SCAMS:

Jeff,
In quite a few of your recent messages you have had people report the email scams. Here are some basic ways to spot if an email is not genuine.

A scam email will typically have one or more of these characteristics

Generic greeting. In almost all cases they will not use your real name because they don’t know you, it will say something like Dear customer, Dear online user or Dear ‘email address’. This shows they do not know who you are. Any direct email from a genuine organisation you deal with will know and use your real name. If the email does not have your name, delete it.

Request for information. It will say they want you to send them some information, usually for verification reasons. A genuine organisation knows your details they would not have to ask you for them by email.

Threat. It may say that if you do not reply, some undesirable action may take place, such as closing or suspending your account. Genuine organisations do not act in this way.

Suspicious link or attachment. To provide the information, they want you to click on a web link or open an attachment. The link will not be a real link to the organisation. Often it is to a fake site where it will ask you to provide your personal details, or take you to a site that is trying to sell you something or display undesirable content. If they ask you to open an attachment, this can often be a way of loading a virus onto your computer.

You may also notice bad spelling and grammar.

If in ANY doubt, do not action the email. Instead telephone the real company and ask them if it is genuine. In almost every case it will not be. Remember, if calling, do not use a telephone number quoted in the email, find out the telephone number yourself through the web or directory enquiries.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Paul

Our grateful thanks to Paul for making this simple and understandable.

Next some really good advice from Mike:
Jeff,

There are two other giveaways for scam emails. If I get an email from Barc/lloyds Bank plc, and I don’t bank with Barc/lloyds, then clearly it’s a scam and gets deleted immediately.
The second give away is if I get an email from Barc/lloyds and I do bank with them – as I’ve never given them my email address and there aren’t any email address directories – it must be a scam and gets deleted immediately!

Clearly, you need to think about who you’ve given your email address to and be selective who gets it. If you do bank with the people who sent the email and gave them your email, then you’ve got to think about the content and follow your IT guy’s advice; otherwise, bin it!

Regards

Mike

MEMBERS ADVICE:
I have received this email from Val PcPherson, who runs the Thames Valley Association of NHW. If you wish to nominate a co-ordinator please let me or Val know. I will be circulating details of the conference as soon as they are available – but we have the date.
Hi Jeff
The Thames Valley Neighbourhood Watch Association has decided to hold a Conference for all the Co-ordinators across TV region this year and alongside our AGM to run an Awards Ceremony for those Co-ordinators, who have gone the extra mile !

This is where we need your help - please can you send me details of any Co-ordinator(s) that you think may deserve an Award for being proactive and also anyone who has been a long standing Co-ordinator within NHW. We will need a short resume of what they have done or achieved. Sorry it is a quick turnaround, but I will need nominations back to me by the 1st March?

Our AGM/Conference/Awards will take place on Saturday 5th May. Further details to follow once everything has been arranged.

Thank you for your help again.

Best wishes

Val
