MEMBERS’ COMMENTS

Hi Jeff,

May 3rd 11/30am I received a cold call, thanking me for all my help in the ‘Children's Charity Run’ which has been / is in the Windsor area at the moment.  The person went on to say they had raised £25,000 and apologised for not sending me an invoice.  I was taken completely unaware and said they were mistaken.  I knew nothing about this charity, so please do not bother with the invoice.  The woman then became agitated and insisted, I WAS getting this invoice.

She knew my first name and the name of my house.  She then put the phone down on me !
Has anyone else had this happen this week ?

Eileen.

Hi Jeff,

My mother(83) was receiving a lot of nuisance calls.  On advice from BT we bought and installed Truecall (www.truecall.co.uk ), a nuisance call blocker.  It is fantastic.  We have set it up so that only friends and family are put through to my mother's phone.  Everyone else is invited to leave a message.  I can dial in to the check for messages remotely.  In addition, there is a web link which we have set to transmit every night.  This allows me to check all the calls, made to my mother's phone number, whether they left a message etc, on the internet.  Truecall has many different settings, allowing you to find one to suit your needs.  I now know, my mother is not bothered by nuisance calls and, even more important, will not be enticed into a scam.

I am not sure if you can recommend this product by name, but until I spoke to BT, I was not even aware this technology existed.  It might help other people out there with elderly relatives and friends.

Regards

Shan

Re the Security Company cold calling :

Dear Jeffrey,

I too have received a call from this company (yesterday afternoon).  I first asked if they were working with the police - the line went dead!

Question answered.

Thanks for keeping us so well informed.

Have a good weekend

Best wishes to you and your team

Valerie

And another response !

Hi Jeff

I too received one of these calls yesterday and they said they were covering the SL6 area [mine] and I just said I was working with local community police officers, in partnership with Thames Valley Police and they put the phone down on me, before I had a chance to.  Wonder if they thought my line was monitored?

Regards

Margaret

You all know what to do now !

More dodgy calls:

Hi Jeff
over the past 3 weeks, I have had a number of calls from an "Internet Security Company", working on behalf of my Computer Company.  I don’t have one, so where they got that from, I don’t know .
The first call, was by an obviously foreign lady, who couldn’t speak much English, which I thought was strange for a computer security team.  The call was stopped by me immediately.
Then over the next 3 weeks, I have had 5 calls, all from the same company, stating that I have a security breach problem and that I was using inappropriate software.  To fix it, they needed my Internet password and all my bank details --again strange --Why bank details ???
The final call yesterday and ended up with me asking their company name, address and phone number (as all phone numbers were with held), only to be met with a load of abuse and threats, to my house and family . This was obviously a Scam, but please be advised that it got very scary at the end.  I have contacted BT and asked them to look into this matter, but as it was a withheld number, we don’t hold out much success.
Bt have advised me, to hang up immediately and keep a record of time and date, of all calls.

Thanks Jeff

Nicholas
