MEMBERS ADVICE:
Hi Jeff,
Apropos the "Windows Scam"

A year ago, I suffered exactly the same scam. After a great deal of prevarication on my part on the final demand of pay £85 or loose internet connection. I paid. Subsequently I received a PayPal receipt dated 7th April 2011 for $139 USD paid to PRAMILA GIRI, I still have a copy of the receipt

Disturbingly, exactly a year later my computer developed problems. A few days later I received an unsolicited telephone call, the caller speaking in heavily accented Asian English, started his patter. I immediately put the phone down. For the next few days I got calls, always around 12 noon. I asked my wife to answer the phone, on the pretext I was not available. By the fourth call, 23rd. April, I answered. It was the same patter. I asked from where was he ringing and he replied London. As the timing was inconvenient, I asked him to leave his name and telephone number and explained that I would telephone him back. He said his name was Adam, and his telephone number was 44 0800 111 4567. We all know, 44 omitting the first 0, is the UK international call code - he included the first 0. I have not returned the call and my computer is presently working satisfactorily.

At an age of four score years and ten, and virtually IT ignorant, I find this constant threat to my online connection, most disturbing. Perhaps the above information will be of interest, and assist in the closing down of this scam.

Best wishes,
Frank

As you can see this scam does cause enormous concern to people. May I remind you – they have nothing to do with Windows, nor your service provider. They cannot affect your connection – whatever they say they can do. The minute you start to hear the patter – JUST PUT THE PHONE DOWN – DON’T EVEN LISTEN.
