Crime: 18 May 2012
I
have had several enquiries about reporting crime online.
You can do this and this is the link: https://reportonline.thamesvalley.police.uk/ I
have attached a printout of the page so that you can familiarise yourself
with the information that will be required, before you consider this
option. The page will not
look exactly the same because I have lost the formatting. The
simplest method is of course to dial 999 or phone the PEC on 101. CRIME: BISHAM,

COMMENTS: The
gauntlet has been thrown down ! Hi
Jeff, First
time communicator ! I
have enjoyed all your readers “Tips”, to make us all safer from those
who wish to do us wrong and have just heard of a friend of mine, whose son
fell for the following scam and I would like your and your members advice
as to how this should have been handled. He
placed his motorcycle for sale on e-bay and was contacted yesterday, by a
potential buyer over phone. The
number of the potential “buyer” was withheld, but my friend’s son
gave the address, so the purchaser could view the bike the next day. Overnight
– the bike was stolen. The
police estimate the theft took place at some time between My
question to you Jeff, is how does one protect against a similar scam in
the future ? Obviously
be wary giving any info out to “number withheld” calls.... but for
genuine buyers of your goods, what questions should you ask ? I
throw it open to you, everyone out there and your great team of crime
fighters, in the hope that we may be able to educate people to be aware
that not all e-bay callers, are what they seem! With
very best wishes and keep up the good work, Peter. P.S.The
crime was committed in Virginia Water Wednesday night My
advice as always – never give personal information over the phone.
If you have to show an item – choose a public place – a car
park etc. Never hand the keys
/ vehicle over to a stranger for a test drive.
Always go with them. Do
not fall for the old scam where you drive the car
somewhere
for a test drive, with the purchaser in the passenger seat.
Remember the Insurance issues / implications of an uninsured
stranger driving your vehicle ! The
purchaser then asks to drive. You
stop and get out, to go round to the passenger side, leaving the keys in
the ignition ……………..You know the rest !!!
