FIRSTLY ANOTHER WARNING – IT ONLY ARRIVED A FEW MINUTES AGO - ABOUT SOFTWARE COMPANIES COLD CALLING – DON’T FALL FOR IT !

Hi Jeffrey,

I have just come back from a client who was unfortunate enough to have been caught out by one of the current scams going around at the moment.  Unfortunately he was scammed out of around £550 by a company claiming to be called xxxxxxx Internet Security.  They managed to persuade him that he needed their Antivirus software and got him to install remote control software on this computer.  They then proceeded to install various other pieces of software.

Luckily, his daughter was visiting from Australia and found out about this and gave me a call.  With some difficulty, I managed to remove the remote control software and the other software that had been installed and the bank & police, have started fraud investigations against this company.  However, as they appear to be based in India , I don’t think they will have much luck.

As luck would have it, when I went to drop their computer off, the company happened to call again, while I was still there.  I was able to listen in on the conversation.  Once again, they tried to get this gentleman’s daughter, to visit a website to install the remote control software – they tried to trick her, by saying that it sounded like a ‘front company’ had called previously and that by logging onto her father’s computer, they would be able to find out who it was and give her a refund – total rubbish of course.

Fortunately I was there and was able to see their con at work.  After telling them we would call them back we asked them for a phone number – they promptly hung up!

So, the point of this email is to ask you to please warn everyone on the Thames Valley Alert list – in fact, on all lists. If anyone phones from a company claiming to be an ‘Antivirus Company’ saying there is something wrong with your computer, or that you need Antivirus software, please just hang up.

They will give up eventually, but DO NOT have a conversation with them, as they can be quite persuasive to those who have little computer knowledge.  This is very similar to the current scam from people phoning and claiming to be from ‘Microsoft’ or ‘Windows’.

After seeing this elderly gentleman break down in tears while thanking me, I don’t want anyone else to fall for one of these scams.

If you have any questions regarding this scam, please do not hesitate to contact me.
