Crime: 26 June 2012

A passer by reported a green laser being shone from a house window in Maidenhead up into the sky.  If you have or know of kids with one of these laser pointers, let them know the authorities take such reports very seriously.  The police were called, attended the house and someone was arrested for ‘Endangering the Safety of Aircraft’.  As you can imagine, we live under the flight path and we receive reports from Air traffic control at Heathrow as well – it does blind the pilots !

COMMENTS FROM OUR MEMBERS:

Hi Jeff

Thought I'd share a useful purchase with you and the rest of the members - a solar powered security light which I bought from an electronic supply store.  We've previously had our shed and summer house broken into and as we don't have any electrics in the garden, it's been a great, cheap alternative, to getting someone in to run electrics all the way down the garden to install a light.

It was £30, it's waterproof and has a movement sensor. It's stayed charged and worked even with the weather being as it is!

Great knowing if anyone is in the garden, they'll trigger the sensor and on comes the light.

Thanks

Zoe

Many thanks Zoe – a very cheap solution for peace of mind.

Subject: PPI scam

Hello Jeffrey,

I wanted to let you know about a phone call I have just received. I was immediately suspicious and on further inspection after the conversation had ended, it is clear that it was a scam call.

So I wanted to warn you, so you in turn can warn other people via your regular community emails.

My mobile rang at around 12.15pm today and a lady told me that I had possibly been mis-sold Payment Protection Insurance (PPI), either through a credit card, mortgage, loan or other hire purchase. I decided to adopt a listening approach, rather than give any info out myself, because I immediately thought ‘this sounds dodgy’.

The lady said she work for a company ‘on behalf of the Ministry of Justice’.

I have since Googled the numbers she gave me and they features on several scam sights.

Anyway, I gave her no info about myself, told her I felt it was all a bit odd and that I would prefer to go away and look into the subject first.

She responded by saying ‘Well yeah, that’s fine…’ and hung up on me! So then I really thought something dodgy was going on! Hence my subsequent Googling etc.

Anyway, hope you can use this info to stop someone else falling victim to this scam, hook line and sinker.

Regards, Andy

NEXT:

I am getting lots of reports about the ‘I am writing this with tears in my eyes’…..email.  This is usually the result of a virus on a person’s computer that is how it picks up the names it inserts, to make it more believable and personal.  As you can see the grammar and formatting leave a lot to be desired:

I'm writing this with tears in my eyes,my family and i came down here to Madrid, Spain for a short vacation to visit a resort and got mugged at gun point last night at the park of the hotel where we lodged. All cash, credit cards and cell were stolen off me.I've been to the embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all,our flight leaves today and I'm having problems settling the hotel bills, we still have some money in our account but we don't have access to it right from here.

There is a job in the police computer this morning, where someone received an unsolicited email from an investment company in Italy proposing a sure fired investment, with a huge return.  He sent them thousands of pounds.  The company later responded that the investment had been successful, would he like to invest more, in another venture – he did.  Then, he asked for his money back, plus all the profits.  He has not heard from them since and has now reported all this to the police !  Anyone who receives these messages, would never have done such a foolish thing.  We need to sign as many people up as possible to protect them !  Over to you.
