3/9  Monday 3 p.m. / 4.30 p.m.   Tithe Barn Drive .  Burglary  Handbag left upstairs in a bedroom.  The owner then found it gone along with some keys from the kitchen table – no sign of any disturbance.  The owner found the side gate and rear kitchen door open !  This is what happens.  Opportunist thieves are always looking for an opportunity – a mistake that we have made.  They will walk up and down driveways trying front doors and side gates in order to get to the rear of a property.  Walking down a side access they will try a side door, even if they think you are at home – people leave handbags on kitchen tables and worktops and it only takes them a second to look in, see something interesting, take it and walk away.  As I said in a recent message, if you found someone in your kitchen – what would you do ?  The answer is be totally confused.  Your first question would be – ‘What are you doing in my kitchen’???  They will come up with a suitable answer – ‘looking for Tony, doesn’t he live here’ ? – whatever – giving them time to reach the door and leave.  You will still be standing there, wondering what just happened – shock sets in !  Side / rear accesses / gates, need to be as secure as your front door.  If a thief can climb over / open them – they can work undisturbed at the back of your house.  They must never get that far.  If you have any concerns about your locks and security, your Neighbourhoods are organising Burglary Road Shows and I will be publicising the dates shortly.  In the meantime if you would like a FREE Police Home Security survey, simply contact your Neighbourhood Team via the email address above – and ask for one !
