MEMBERS COMMENTS:

The Windows Scam is still very much alive and with us still.  Can you let everyone you know, how it works please and warn them to just put the phone down.  I have just had this in:

Hello Jeff,

I wonder if you can help me.

Yesterday afternoon I received a phone call from www.thealientouch.com. After a VERY lengthy conversation the caller (Asian) asked me to run a programme, as he said that there were problems with our Windows system. Foolishly after a LOT of convincing and showing me a lot of problems on the computer and speaking to his supervisor, I did this.

I am now very concerned about what I have done and find that there is a new programme on the computer.

Eventually he tried to sell me a software warranty which I declined.

Can you please help me to sort this out, or point me in the right direction ?

Kind regards

I am sorry to say, we have not been very successful in spreading a warning about this scam.  It has 2 areas of concern – one that you hand the contents of your hard drive over to them – bank, Paypal details plus any transactions you have made online, but – if you pay the warranty online – they have your credit card details and security code on the back !

Please spread it as far as you can.  I have asked Paul Hay our Computer Guru, who very kindly volunteers his time to assist members of NHW, to help clear the software out of the computer

NEXT CHARITY COLLECTIONS – AND I APOLOGISE IN ADVANCE TO THOSE REAL CHARITY COLLECTORS WHO WORK REALLY HARD TO RAISE MONEY AT THIS TIME:

Dear Jeff

This afternoon at approx. 3.15pm someone knocked at my door in Oaklands Drive Ascot.

He was a smart young man around 20 –25 years old, carrying a clip board with Red Cross on it and some pictures, which he didn’t show me.

We have the police notice next to the door knocker saying “we do not buy etc”.

Before I could refer to the notice, he said they had been asked by the Red Cross to speak to people in the 25 – 70yr age group.

‘Was I in that age group’ ?

I said yes.  He then asked,

‘Do you know how to call an ambulance?

Before I could answer, he said dial 999.

He then asked whether I had first aid training, I said, No.  He said do you know how to put a plaster on? I said, Yes.

He then said

‘We are asking people to give £2 a month to the Red Cross, can I put you down as one of those people’ ?

I said no.

A friend called at this point and I said to her “Do come in.”  He then said “Does that mean me too”.  I said No !

Thinking about this,   “Was he genuine?”.  I thought I should tell you about it, just in case.

Yvonne

MY ADVICE ?

Charity collectors are facing a really hard time at the moment – BUT – they will want you to complete a ‘Standing Order’ form for the amount they would like you to pay each month – even if it is only £2, along with a tax form, so that they can reclaim the tax paid.  This is the problem.  There is no way, you can hand over details of your bank, branch, bank account number and of course your signature on any document etc., to a complete stranger, who happens to call at your door – whoever they say they are and however good the cause.  Please take the paperwork from them and make your own arrangements.  You can drop it into one of the recognised Charity shops, or mail it direct to the Charity headquarters.  It is a shame, we cannot be more open, but those are the times we live in.

NEXT- another strange one.

Last week we had the strange case of someone using a ladder to climb over a tall fence into a rear garden, then using it climb a plum tree and completely stripping it of fruit.  We had speculation it may be birds, but it remained a strange incident.  Well !  That resident was not alone !  I have had this in:

Hi jeff

Just wondered if anyone has had any fruit stolen?  We live in Onslow Road , Sunningdale and had 11 pears taken from our pear tree in our drive (I know this, as my 6 year old had counted them on Sunday 9th). The person would have had to walk all the way into our drive to take them. It is very annoying.

We were burgled nearly a year ago and do have cctv, but I can't see anyone. We find it a very strange thing to do.

Many thanks

Kate

Has anyone else had this happen to them ?  It is the type of thing you think is odd and don’t bother to tell anyone about.  It may be more widespread than we know.

SORRY – LOTS TO END THE WEEK !
