Crime: 17 October 2012

This happened in Datchet and carries a message for us all !!!
16/10 Tuesday 5 a.m. Eton Road, Datchet. The owner was awoken by a noise in the night and went to investigate – looking out of a window, she saw a black man getting out of her car on the driveway and then ride off on a bike. The car had been left INSECURE – loose change stolen. Some people do leave their cars unlocked outside their houses, to stop the glass being smashed if anyone targets their car. This will act as and become a ‘crime attractor’, if the local opportunist thieves – who do talk to each other, begin to realise this. Your car is unlikely to be targeted, if you leave nothing on display. Loose change / sunglasses in the centre console are enough. It sends a message that there may be other things left in the car – such as a SAT NAV in the glove box, a wallet in that jacket on the back seat, something worth having in the plastic shopping bag left on view ???

MEMBERS COMMENTS:

I was really pleased to receive this email through from Catrine. It shows our message is getting through. NHW is not only, when you are at home or in your road; it is about being aware, wherever you are. Catrine, experienced something and is going to do something about it – follow it up, to make sure no-one becomes a victim of a potential crime. That is what the Alert / Ringmaster system is all about. I supply you with the information you need, to raise your awareness. Your part of the bargain, is to spread that knowledge to those who do not have the benefit of all this information, at their fingertips. Catrine has seen an issue, brought it to ‘our’ (meaning you and me) attention and will follow it up – I am really grateful – I hope we would all do the same ???

Dear Jeff,
An experience I had while shopping today, could have turned out quite differently:
I had finished shopping and was paying for my car parking in the Nicholson’s Car Park in Maidenhead. As I had my purse open, a gentleman approached and asked if I had 2 x 10p coins. I did, and gave them to him in exchange for his 20p coin. I then finished my payment transaction and returned to my car. It wasn’t until I got to my car that I realised:
a) the gentleman could easily have changed his coin at the machine on the level below
b) most people would have waited for me to complete my transaction, rather than interrupt (he had to wait for me to finish anyway, before being able to use the payment machine)
c) it was badly lit in the area around the payment machine
d) his female companion stood very close behind me, on the side that I carry my handbag.
I quickly checked the contents of my handbag, but all seemed to be in order - I carry my bag close to my body and ensure it is secure, but you never know . . .
It could have been a perfectly innocent exchange, but I phoned the Centre Management as soon as I got home, and they said they would contact the Car Park Management to check their CCTV. However, I thought it might be worth warning people to be vigilant in this car park because the payment machines on levels 2 and 4 are particularly badly lit, and are positioned in such a way as to make free movement very difficult.
On reflection, I will contact the Car Park Management myself and suggest that, in the interest of safety, they re-position these particular payment machines to facilitate much easier access and movement, and improve the lighting.

Regards
Catrine

Next the phone calls to say your computer is working slowly are still being made:

Hi Jeff

Just to let you know I just got a call from a guy who was called Leon to say that they had been receiving reports that my computer was having problems. That it was downloading damaging material from the Internet.

He went onto say that I must have noticed the computers been running slow. I replied no, and phone went dead.

I wondered how far he would go! Thanks for the warnings. I wouldn't have let him have access to my computer anyway, but it was great having the heads up!!

Thanks again

Sherry

The fact that this company is still making calls means that they are still making money ! People are still falling for it – we must tell everyone we know to just put the receiver down !
