MEMBERS COMMENTS:

This is what I mean by eyes and ears !

Jeff,

Just to let you know, I was walking with my daughter today and we walked down the public footpath (it's a very steep hill!)  at Quarry Wood (the footpath finishes just before the small bridge just before Longridge). We both remarked on a silver metal wheelbarrow (it looked to be in good condition) that appeared to have been abandoned at the bottom of the path.

Not sure if this might be the one that was stolen from the Cookham allotments?

Kind regards

Aine

We cannot be everywhere.  The police concentrate their resources where they are most needed - where crimes occur.  The rest of us are all over the place, driving to and from work, social engagements, driving kids to school / after school clubs and activities– at all sorts of hours.  We see things, we notice things – like the wheel barrow.  We do though, need to do something with that information – and do it at the time.  If you see anything you feel would be of interest to the police – and you never know what that might be, because you may only be seeing a small part of something that is occurring – the old jigsaw principle – but if your attention was drawn to something, rely on your instincts, we have them for a reason and if it was nothing, your attention would not have been drawn.  If it is something happening now, use the 101 number – explain that you are simply passing us ‘intelligence’.  If it does not appear to need immediate action, you can email the information to me on the email address below and I will pass it through to whoever needs to know.  The information could relate to people walking up and down driveways acting suspiciously / people walking along parked cars looking in them or trying car door handles (both should be 101 calls) to finding abandoned property / strange car parked in your road either unoccupied or with 2 or 3 strange / not the usual people who would be in your road, inside.  Please let us be the judge of whether or not the information is useful, we may well have other parts of the jigsaw !!!!

I have been sent this:

Hi Jeff

Glad the volcanos were good!  I spotted this on the Windsor Parents Facebook page, today:

Buyer beware!!

I almost had my IPhone stolen right under my nose, while eating lunch in a Windsor restaurant today.  I dare say the lady who tried to steal it, does the rounds.  She was trying to "sell" my 3 year old daughter a birthday card, but while I was saying "no thank you, please go away", she was slipping my phone, under the card.

I thought I should share this experience, because I would hate it to happen to anyone else.

I ‘commented’ that the lady should report it on 101 (exactly the right thing to do – we always have someone from Tamara’s team in the Town Centre who would have located the woman and had perhaps more than a word !), but thought you might want to be aware as well.

Regards,

Milica

Many thanks Milica, I have been banging on about this for several years now, but I am preaching to the converted.  We all know about this problem, but we have to get to those that don’t.  If you see someone with a phone on a coffee table, you cannot really approach them direct, but you can go up to a staff member and ask them to.  We are putting together an initiative with Anne Chalmers our Crime Reduction Advisor.  We have tried working with the restaurants / coffee shops, asking them to get their staff to keep and eye out and warn customers, but with staff changes that is difficult.  Anne is designing a postcard, which would be attractive to tourists and visitors alike that they would like to pick up – perhaps an antique looking card of an old British Bobby, issuing a warning.  We have to do something – any budding graphic artists out there ???

EVEN MORE !

A Police Sergeant received this in his inbox and as this is the time for tax returns etc, felt a warning might be appropriate.  It has all the hallmarks of a scam – no named addressee, an attachment and threat if you don’t open / deal with it etc !  I have corrected the spelling, but ‘Notification’ was spelt incorrectly !

AND THIS:

Happy New Year Jeff,

I wanted to alert everyone to an incident on the M4 spur, just after the Braywick roundabout.  I was flagged down by a broken down car and a man asked for money for petrol. I reported it to the police, who said that this was a common scam and they always ‘ hang’ just off a motorway so can get away quickly.

Everyone wants to be a good citizen, but we all need to be aware of this scam.

Sue

Many thanks Sue, if we stop to help someone, this will now be in the back of our minds.

NEXT: – One of our members has had a problem with a ‘free’ introductory slimming product offer and wants to warn others !!!

Hi Jeff,

I have recently fallen for a scam concerning a well known slimming appliance, plus free trial.  If you Google the company and product, you will see a whole library of complainants and correspondence.  Over the weekend I had to cancel my card, to prevent any further withdrawals.  You can see from the correspondence online that the company has moved to the Republic of Ireland, seemingly, outside the British legal system.
This morning I have received an e mail from the company in Ireland, offering a two week free trial of the diet which supports the slimming appliance, so it seems they are still running the same scam, but under a different name.  Since they are still active, I thought I should bring it to the attention of everyone else and recommend to all other members that before they consider buying products,  Google them first, to read customer feedback before purchasing – or signing up, for what appears to be free introductory / trial offers !

Sometimes they are not exactly, what they appear to be !

Excellent advice there from John and with something like Google – so easy to do and it only takes a few moments !

NEXT – an addition to my advice re Christmas presents – What to do with the boxes !

Hi Jeff

Great to have you back!

Another tip...  Don't pile those new gadgets' boxes out with the recycling.  Last week on bin day, it was so easy to identify the houses in our village, which had got brand new huge LCD TVs, or computers!

 Dave

Thanks Dave, this is a really serious point.  Our ‘Opportunist thieves’ are always on the lookout for possible targets.  Showing them all the new gadgets in your home is not a good idea.  Playstation and X Box, boxes, are just what they are looking for – especially the latest versions.  So, please collapse the boxes before putting them out or at least, open them up and turn them inside out ???
