A REALLY GOOD END TO THE WEEK – ONLY 2 CRIMES TO REPORT FOR THE LAST 48 HOURS !

First – confirmation that the ‘ticket in the doorframe’ to establish if anyone is home, is possibly be happening here in RBWM !  Please keep an eye on your neighbours houses.  If you see anything in the door frame – please remove it and put it through the letterbox – and let me know.  That way we can track what might be happening.

Dear Jeff

Thanks for this, it is very useful to know.  This appears to have happened to us 2-3 weeks ago.  When I got home from work, there was a business card from a local taxi firm, wedged in our door frame.  I remember being very annoyed at the time, and blaming the taxi firm and wondering why they would have done this, rather than just putting it through the letterbox ?

I meant to let you know before, but now I know what it might have meant, I will be all the more vigilant.

Thanks again for the really useful updates

Mark

Again, something which appears to be very innocent, but could be so much more  !!  That is why these messages are so vital !

FIRST – RE THE SCARY SCAM EMAILS:

Hi Jeff,

When I receive this type of email, scary or not, I always Google the subject. As expected, 99.99% of these, are, as we say, scams. I then let my friends or family know. They usually feel a bit silly afterwards, but do think twice now before forwarding.

Kind regards, Jenny

MY GRATEFUL THANKS JENNY !  A REALLY SIMPLE SOLUTION, BEFORE YOU PERPETUATE THE FEAR, ANXIETY AND APPREHENSION, TO THOSE WE LOVE AND CARE ABOUT.

NEXT a humerous anecdote !

Hi Jeff

Thought you might like to hear a funny one about the Microsoft scam.  My brother got a call.  After he had asked several questions, such as - which computer (he had several) and what is the IP address of the computer in question and received unsatisfactory answers.  The man from 'Microsoft', got quite irate and said I'M FROM MICROSOFT' to which my brother replied 'and I'm from IBM' - which he is!!

Needless to say - Mr Microsoft hung up !

Sue.

Thanks Sue, perhaps something for us all to say !!!!!

Re the Fedex scam,

Hi Jeff

It really is worth forwarding these scam emails to

abuse@fedex.com

They will confirm it is a scam and proceed to shut the site down.  Of course new scam sites will spring up, but it does help Fedex to fight back.

Another email address for phishing scams:

Hi Jeff,

Please circulate this email.

Before I opened the link in a phishing email I received from a bank, I called Santander.  They said it was a scam and asked me to pass on their email addres, in case anyone gets a similar message which purports to come from them.  Please forward the message to:-

 phishing@santander.co.uk

They will investigate where the email was sent from, to close down that address.

Thanks,

Jackie

Hello Jeff,

I've had a number of these emails supposedly from PayPal. I've forwarded them to ' spoof@paypal.com ' and thought you might like to warn others
I hope this works!
Best wishes,
Chris

Thanks Owen and Chris, we can all help by doing this.  If you get scam emails from other companies, try sending it to the real company so that they can do the same – it’s what we are – helpful !

Re scams – Norman has sent me a real hum dinger !  This is one to frame and put on the wall !

It comes from:.............................

The Right Honourable David Cameron (MP) Prime Minister, First lord of the Treasury and Minister for the Civil Service British Government.......It goes on to say that you have been given a special credit card – ‘accredited in your favour’.  You will be able to use it in any cash till, to remove up to £5,000.........can you please let them have – all your personal details !!!

It is from:

Rt Hon William Hague MP.
First Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs

I bet no-one can beat that !

I received some feedback from our North Ascot residents, re the piece I put out about Repair With Care, which only covers RBWM.  I had an email from Paul Westgarth at Home Instead – Senior Care.  He emailed me to say:

Hi Jeff,

We don’t do the repairing, but we do, do the caring.  I have some very reliable contacts in the Twyford / Wokingham / Bracknell area for repairs etc. through the ‘Twyford Village Partnership’ (have you come across them, if not I can put you in contact?)

I have attached our brochure and hope it will help your members.

Many thanks

Regards

Paul

NEXT:

I have had this in and it raises several points:

Hi Jeff

I reported immediately a doorknocker via the 101 line.  He was offering to shovel snow from the driveway and was carrying a large snow shovel. I asked him what he was charging for the snow shovelling and he said £2 or whatever I could afford.  I replied that I was going to do the work myself.  However you might like to flag this up on the site as another door knocking excuse.

Thanks

XX

OK the snow is now virtually gone, but as this member says, it is another reason for going door to door.  It may well be genuine – and each of us would have to make a value judgement when answering the door.  Our NHW Mantra is – I am sorry, I don’t buy goods and services at the door.  This may just have been an intro to other services – do you have any other jobs you want me to do – inside - as it is so cold outside ?????
