SECOND - Community Policing Awards

Last year our very own PCSO Liz Davidson, who covers the rural Neighbourhood in Maidenhead, won PCSO of the year for the Thames Valley – and we are very proud of her.  One of her many projects was to work with the Littlewick Green Service Station where they offer free number plate attachment, using security screws.  So – if you lose a number plate and purchase replacements, don’t just glue them on, go to the L.G. Service Station and they will attach them for you – free of charge !

If you think your local Neighbourhood Team offers superlative service !!!!!!!  Follow the link and nominate.  It shows their hard work is appreciated !!!

Nominations are now open for the Community Policing Awards, which give members of the public, community groups, police officers, and staff the opportunity to nominate someone who has made a real difference to their community.

The awards are designed to recognise the efforts of Thames Valley Police’s Neighbourhood Policing teams, including Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), Special Constables and Volunteers who have had a positive impact on their local community.

Fill out the nomination form on the TVP website: http://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/newsevents-events-cpa-nominate

There is also a Diversity Champion of the Year award for the officer, staff member, or volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to promote diversity within the Force. Any team or individual can be nominated for the award if they have carried out work which champions diversity, or helped effective policing and crime reduction for diverse groups.

2/3  Saturday 3.30 p.m.  St Mark’s Road.  A witness saw a man removing fence panels from a garden and placing them in the back of his van.  They called the police, who attended immediately recovering the property and arresting the man.

3/3  Sunday 10 p.m.  Calder Close X 2.  1.  A witness saw someone remove a trailer from a driveway and wheel it away down the road.  The police were called and carried out an area search.  A man matching the description was arrested.  He also had tools on him and was also arrested for going equipped. 2.  A witness saw a man walk up the drive and try a car door handle – which opened the door.  The car was searched and the man was seen to put some property into his trouser pocket.  He then left.  The witness called the police who attended immediately carried out an area search and located a man matching the description given.  He admitted the offence.

5/3  Tuesday 6.45 p.m. / 7.45 p.m.  Chatsworth Close.  Attempted burglary.  Front window smashed – no entry gained – were they disturbed ?  Did someone hear the noise ?

5/3  Tuesday 7.30 p.m.   Clare Road.  Burglary.  Offender climbed in through a rear kitchen window LEFT OPEN.  Carried out a search of the house, but were disturbed when the owner returned.  2 men were seen running downstairs and out through a back door.  They then ran down the side of the house and off up the road.  How were they able to get out of the back door ?  Keys must have been left in the door or nearby.  Apart from the kitchen window left open – if anyone breaks in, we want to make it as hard as possible.  So – they have to force / smash a window and climb over broken glass which increases the chances of forensic evidence.  NO KEYS anywhere, then they have to go back out over the glass – and – of course if they are leaving through a window, they can only take very small items with them.  Make it as hard as possible – they will simply look for an easier target – there is always someone that will have left a rear window open / back door unlocked.

COMMENTS FROM MEMBERS:

RE PARKING ON PAVEMENTS !!!!

If you let me know where we have problems, our PCSOs and RBWM Community wardens are always willing to follow it up with a visit – simply email your Neighbourhood Team at the group email above:

Hi

Just to confirm I have attended the road you mentioned with Trish (RBWM Community Warden) on Friday 1st March.  We spoke with the gentleman, who has his vehicles on the pathway.  At the time of our visit, there was no obstruction.

We gave the appropriate advise to the gentleman with regard to ensuring road safety and causing an obstruction.

Many thanks Jeff – we are always happy to go and check out this sort of thing and offer the appropriate advice.

THE VIRUS EMAILS CONTAINING JUST A LINK:

Hi Jeff

The emails from friends containing just a URL seem to be prolific at the moment. I am having about fifteen a day. It seems that groups that use Yahoo have been particularly badly hit.

Regards

Liz

AND A REMINDER:

Hi Jeff

Please remind everyone to use their mouse to “hover” over any link (without clicking!!) in any dubious e-mails – no matter who they appear to come from.  This should reveal where the link is really from and allow most computer savvy people, to see that the link is not a trusted one.

But as everyone says, just don’t click on any link in an e-mail unless you are sure it’s been forwarded on by an actual friend – most people would add something or leave a signature (like mine at the end of this).  Just because it’s from someone in your address book, doesn’t mean a thing anymore!

PHONE CALLS FROM A SECURITY COMPANY:

Hi Jeff - Have just had a phone call from a security company. They said they are in the area of Datchet in the next few days regarding house alarms and was I interested.  They, of course, knew my name and address,  and of course I said I wasn't interested.  If people do make an appointment from a phone call, not sure how much pressure may be made on them and how much it would cost. A friend of mine took on something like this and unknown to her, she had signed up for a contract of about 5 years of repayment.  It took a court case to resolve it and get her out of a very expensive contract.

Just thought you would like to know about it in case there is anything suspicious about it.

A WORRIED RESIDENT:

One of our Area Co-ordinators phoned me, to say that his neighbour had made an appointment for someone to come to her home and she were now worried.  In fact it was perfectly fine.  Because she was worried, I mentioned it to the local Neighbourhood Team.  PCSO Jan Cleaver and PCSO Aneta Welnetz went out and met with her and offered complete reassurance:

Hi Jeff,

just to let you know, I visited the lady with PCSO Aneta Welnetz today.  We gave her some Crime Prevention Advice and reassured her.

I also left our contact details in case she ever has any future concerns.

Regards.

EMERGENCY SERVICES IN RURAL AREAS:

SOME EXCELLENT ADVICE FOR YOU:

Hi Jeff,

I worked for a while as GP in rural Devon - if called at night, we told the people to put on every light in the house - we could then easily find the house - this would work in the rural areas but less well in town

Best wishes

Kevin

SOMEONE ASKED IF THERE WERE TRACKERS FOR LAPTOPS ???

THIS IS THE ADVICE FROM PAUL HAY OUR IT GURU:

Jeff,

While you can search online and find apps that offer a way of tracking laptops, they aren’t really in the same class, or as popular as those tracking mobile devices.  The main reason, is that for it to work, it needs to be ‘discoverable’.

Mobile devices, by their very nature, are always linking up to mobile cell masts / networks because it has a mobile SIM card.  It has a way of always telling people, where they are actually located.

A laptop, only connects to a locating source, when it wants to go online to the internet, either using wireless software or a connecting cable. The tracking program, also needs to be running

All a thief needs to do, is wipe the hard disk, or replace the disk drive - and the tracking software is gone.

While a laptop is expensive to replace, the most valuable information, is more likely to be the data on the hard drive.

The best thing in my opinion, is ensure your laptop is password protected using a very strong password.  If you also think that you are not going to resell your laptop at some time, you could also use one of those indelible pens to visibly mark it (you can do it neatly and tastefully) with your postcode and house number, therefore making it less desirable for a thief who would be looking to sell it on.

Regards,
Paul

Excellent advice – IF THOUGH – you leave it in your car in a Laptop Bag, you need to visibly postcode the laptop bag as well.  A thief may not open it up and check the laptop for postcoding, before stealing it !!!

BUSINESS CARDS IN DOOR FRAMES:

Hi Jeff,

I don’t know if this has happened to anyone else -when I got back home this morning, I found a piece of black hard plastic wedged into the top part of my front door, which made it difficult to close

May

If you find this – you must remove them asap and bin them.  They may possibly have been put there to track whether you are at home or not.  As soon as you return and open the door – they will fall out / be removed.
