COMMENTS: SCAM
EMAIL ONLY CONTAINING A LINK ! I
received an email this morning containing this virus – from myself !
It has obviously slipped under my virus protection !!! The
mail delivery scam ! Dear
Jeff I
thought you and our other members, might be interested in hearing what
happened to me on Tuesday 5th March. My
son had a faulty I-phone, which he had purchased online from O2.
They were going to send him a replacement, but he needed to be in
between 8.30am to 6.00pm to accept delivery.
As he is working, he asked if I would be in to accept delivery. I
said, no problem. However,
early on the morning of the 5th, my son rang to say that O2 had texted to
cancel the delivery for that day, as they were out of stock of his
particular phone - so we went out. When
we got home, there was a note on the doormat, saying a package had been
left at a neighbour’s house.
When we collected then, there were 2 packages addressed to me. I
opened them and found 2 ‘HTC’ android phones. I
rang my son, who couldn't understand what was happening and was rather
annoyed. He
said he would ring O2 and find out what it was all about. He
rang back to say, I had been a victim of ‘identity fraud’. Would
I please ring O2 immediately, which I did. They
confirmed it was true, I had been targeted. Two
contracts had been opened, using someone else's Halifax account. They
confirmed this sort of scam is increasing. They
told me not to be alarmed.
They explained, I would get a phone call from someone to say the
packages were delivered in error and they would come and pick them up. O2
said, if they got nasty, I was to hand the phone over. I
was upset and said I was going to ring the police. Nick
was great when I rang (PEC Operator) and gave me loads of advice and said
that if someone strange knocked on the door, not to open it, but ring 999
and they would be with me in minutes. This was really very reassuring. My
son came over and was very concerned. The
phone then rang and a West Indian voice asked if I was Patricia. I
said I didn't know who he was, and put the phone down. He rang back
immediately and asked if I had received two parcels. I
said yes. He
then said they had been delivered to the wrong address and he would come
and pick them shortly up. I
said I no longer had them.
I had taken them to Ascot Police Station.
If he wanted them back, he could pick them up from there ! He
just put the phone down. I
rang Nick and spoke to Emma (another PEC Operator) and reported the phone
call. Sorry
this is so lengthy, but thought giving you all this detail could help
someone else who might be the victim of this scam. Kind
regards, Patricia I couldn’t have explained it better myself |
