TRAVELLER MARKS:

Hi jeff,

Thank you for your updates.  They are very helpful. I found one of those traveller signs outside my front door, on sat 16th March but it isn’t written in chalk, but in black marker pen. It’s an open book sign. I’ve written over it, to disguise it. I will phone 101.

May

Many thanks May – can everyone remain alert and keep an eye out around their houses and particularly those of vulnerable neighbours who may not know what they are.  If you see one, please photograph it and report it to the PEC on the 101 number.

NEW SCAM PHONE CALL !

Hi  Jeff

I nearly got caught by what I suspect was a scam.  A phone call from a noisy office, addressing me by name and knowing where I live.  He wanted to send someone round to do market testing of some product before its launch - would Tuesday or Wednesday be more convenient?  I put the phone down, and dialled 147 - number withheld.

This was a new version of the usual scam calls.

Sarah

I have received a flier from ‘Home Instead – Senior Care’ about an event they have organised setting out what services area available to those needing care.  Chertsey Road hall, Chertsey Road, Windlesham GU 20 6EW.  April 4th – 2.30 p.m. / 5 p.m.

NEXT: – there was rather a tecchy article in Crime Prevention News last week entitled – ‘ARE OUR WINDOWS SECURE ENOUGH’ ?  If you are thinking about replacing windows at any time, it might be a useful handout to save somewhere to read !  ‘MRS CHALMERS’ TOP TIP’ – If ever you are replacing ground floor windows – always use laminate glass !  It may cost a few pounds more on a quote, but will give you complete reassurance and a good night’s sleep’.

I AM REGISTERED TO RECEIVE ‘ALERT’ MESSAGES FROM NOTTINGHAM AND THIS HAS ARRIVED TODAY FROM TRADING STANDARDS THERE – JUST TO BE AHEAD OF THE GAME – IN CASE ROGUE TRADERS START TO MOVE DOWN THE COUNTRY !

Nottinghamshire County Council's Trading Standards Team, is warning people of unscrupulous traders that are in the area selling mobility aids on the doorstep.

Mobility aids are products that are used by the elderly or disabled such as mobility scooters, wheelchairs, and walk-in baths. These items are often sold to vulnerable people in their home.

Rogue traders often use a range of persuasive and emotional tactics to secure a fast sale and con people out of their money, for example you are made to feel that there is a great urgency in the offer and that if you don't sign up now, you will miss out.

Trading Standards offers the following advice on how people can avoid being scammed by rogue traders selling mobility aids:

·         Never buy any products on the doorstep from a trader who turns up uninvited.

·         Make sure you get everything in writing, especially any incentives, such as discounts or free offers.

·         Find out if the trader you are considering buying from, is a member of a Trade Association, such as the British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA). The BHTA has a code of practice that has been approved by the Office of Fair Trading, under the Consumer Codes Approval Scheme.

The Nottinghamshire County Council website has more information if you wish to find out more about buying mobility aids.
If you or someone you know has been subjected to high pressure selling, or have been misled by a trader please contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service.

SCAM EMAILS:

Dear Jeff

I have received an email from HM revenues & Customs, headed "HMRC tax refund ID xxxxxxxx

It tells me that i have a refund of 377.50GBP, together with an attachment to be filled in, also requesting my telephone Banking PIN.

This came through on my Ipad, so I then checked on my laptop, and noticed that the attachment is Blocked!

I have deleted it, but thought that you should be aware of this new scam  !

Thanks for all your useful alerts

Regards Godfrey

Thank you Godfrey  As we get near the end of the financial year these will no doubt increase !
