23.2 – 23/3  2.15 p.m.  Grange Lane, Cookham.  The owner had 500 litres of heating oil delivered in February.  They called a central heating engineer when their heating went off, only to find 450 litres of oil had been stolen.  Please keep an eye on any external oil tanks !  This may increase as the weather remains bad and fuel prices increase.

22/3  Friday 6.10 p.m. / 6.45 p.m.  Cannon Court Road, Furze Platt.  Burglary via forced rear patio doors.  Untidy search of whole house. Not yet known what was stolen.

22/3  Friday 8.25 p.m.  Clare Road.  Burglary.  The son of the owner returned home and saw the lights on.  He thought nothing of it, believing his parents were at home.  He could not get in, but heard voices inside.  He then saw 2 men making off from the back of the property fence hopping.  They then came out of a neighbour’s side gate into a waiting old car and made off.  We have a description of one of the possibly 3 – 5 men.  White, possibly middle European, 6’, Athletic build wearing a white hoody.  Laptop, Gold jewellery and cash stolen.

22/3  Friday  6.15 p.m. / 8.10 p.m.  Great Hill Crescent.  Rear kitchen door forced – House searched – Jewellery and car keys missing.

OLDFIELD & BRAY:

maidenheadsouthnhpt@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk

23/3  Noon.  Shoppenhangers Road.  A member of the public withdrew cash from a cash till, but walked off leaving the money behind.  A few minutes later when they remembered, they returned, but the money was gone.  This is really just a reminder.  Many people think that if you do not remove the cash, it is automatically withdrawn back into the ATM.  That is sometimes the case – but not always.  Some cash machines do – others do not.  This was one of those cases of – ‘the ATM did not’ !

22/3  Friday 8 p.m. / 9.50 p.m.  Public Car Park, High Street, Bray.  Car broken into Handbag and contents stolen from the boot

PHONE SCAMS:

I received an automated (recorded message) call from 01274 572953 saying they had identified a pensions sum which I could claim. I declined the offer to press 5 or 9 etc and put the phone down. A Google search on the number (which is Bradford) shows that they have been annoying people for several years and are listed on several nuisance call websites. Out of interest I wonder who funds these websites?

On the subject of the Windows scam a friend of mine came up with a useful time-waster – you say ‘Oh, yes I have about 15 windows – downstairs, upstairs, some double glazed .... etc – this tends to baffle the caller and with luck you can talk rubbish to them for several minutes before they ring off!

Tony

I LIKE THIS ONE !

MORE ON THIS SCAM:

Hi Jeff,

I had a call yesterday.

They are far more insistent and aggressive now.

He said he would tell me my serial number of my computer and I could tell him, it's right or not.

I said I knew this was a scam, as I work for Microsoft - he asked what designation was I  !?

I said it was nothing to do with him, but in my position, I was well aware that Microsoft don't do this.

He continued to argue and I eventually, put phone down  !!  He wasn't backing down.  Once again, I thought how awful it would be, if you were vulnerable or inexperienced and trusted them.

I didn't log into my computer (I did consider following to see what would happen) but I was suddenly afraid they might have a way to invade it, as I am on wifi / broadband. So my computer and phone are linked

Can they do this?

Sherry

Hi Sherry,

No, it is not possible.  What he knows, is that you cannot get to the serial number of your computer, as it is usually underneath - if you knew where it was anyway !  They will have all sorts of answers pre-prepared, as they will have been dismissed so often.

It is merely a scam and they can do nothing to get at, or attack your computer.  It is just a scammer on a phone.

ANGELA HAS THIS SUGGESTION:

Hi everyone,

I have a tip for nuisance calls. Despite signing up to the Telephone Preference Service and being Ex-Directory, I still manage to receive lots of calls.

When the phone rings, I have Caller Display so can see if it is from a known number.  If it is not, I simply pick up the phone, but do not speak.

Some automated systems that are calling randomly generated numbers will only connect once contact has been made.

If you don't say anything the call is not connected and the line goes dead.

I have been doing this for a month or so now and have seen the number of calls I receive decline.

HOW ABOUT THIS ONE !

Hi Jeff,

I have had quite a number of the 'Windows' scam phone calls and have found the following very effective:

'Calling about my windows ? About b***** time too, you are taking your time to fix it !  Do you know how b***** annoying having a stuck kitchen window is ????'

If he doesn't hang up, just go into 'you must have the wrong person, a computer is totally useless to me as I am blind' and an ending tirade about kitchen smells, impregnating clothes, rooms etc

It works.

Tony

I got this late on Friday afternoon, sitting alone in the office and roared with laughter !
