COMMENTS: Operation
of Key Fobs ! Hi
Jeff Having
read many of your updates about cars left insecure/entered by unknown
means and a recent trip away started me thinking. I
mainly drive a van for my business and my previous van had alarm problems
from day one, locking, unlocking by itself and going off at random. So
much so that on a trip to North Wales I parked the van in the hotel car
park in line of sight to my room some 300m away, just so I could see if it
was my alarm going off. Sure enough it went off a few times and I was
surprised to be able to unlock and relock it from the window, but that was
an advantage which I appreciated and it saved me some legwork being on the
third floor. Thankfully
that van has gone without the manufacturers ever finding the cause of the
alarm problems. I've now taken delivery of a different van which now
allows me to sleep at night. However the other day I had to carry tools
with both hands so locked the van and put the keys into a different
pocket, bent down to pick up the tools and the doors unlocked! This got me
thinking that if something similar happened to other people in car parks,
parking, locking and walking to another floor or out of the car park and
also bent down to pick something up, or rummaging in their handbag and
accidentally activating the key fob would they then know if their car had
unlocked? I'm presuming my experience was coins in the pocket being
squeezed against the key fob and this could happen to anyone. I
know the range of these key fobs is only supposed to be about 25m but
that's enough to be out of earshot or even in another road. My new van
with a new battery in the key fob can reliably work over 50m. What if the
driver locks the car on the drive/road, comes indoors and puts the keys
down heavily on a table? What if their fob also operates up to 300m? Even
though this is a long shot as I know jammers exist and some people don't
lock their doors, but I thought it would be worth mentioning as it might
explain one or two of the 'unknown means'.
